Planning inpatient visit: What is on the inpatient food menu?

Posted by amylward @amylward, Nov 22, 2024

I'll be at Mayo Phoenix hospital in December for a week. I was wondering if it was possible to get a copy of the current general inpatient menu. I have some food sensitivities (not allergies) and usually need to plan ahead a little bit. I'd also love to know if visiting family can request trays, too, at their own expense during mealtimes (some hospitals do this).

I understand that this would just be a general menu and that my doctor will have final call on what sort of food I'll be eating whilst there. 🙂

Great question, unfortunately I do not have answer. But would be good question for Mayo's free Concierge Services. Here is how to contact:
• By phone 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time, Monday-Friday: 507-538-8438
• Email: concierge@mayo.edu
• Online: Request Concierge Services - http://cdforms.mayoforms.org/mayocliniccom-ahbyn/pages/c9d36544cef4e41180d800155dcfc10f.html

There is also a visitor cafeteria, https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/arizona/places-to-eat

Hope that helps.

Hello @amylward. I have attached a copy of the patient menu for the Arizona campus. Hope this information helps with your upcoming trip to Mayo Clinic.

I am very grateful - thank you so much! If you have the carb restricted one as well, I'd love to see that!

I was not able to find a low carb menu for the AZ campus, but Did see there was one under the Rochester campus. I will put that below, hopefully it will be helpful for you.

Tell them what if any foods you are allergic to.

Hospital food will never receive Michelin stars; yet it's amazing that so many dietary needs can be met. Advocacy continues at mealtime. Do speak up about your needs and/or let people staying with you (usually family or friends) know to do that for you if necessary. While our hospital visits are serious, I wish to share a humorous moment after open heart surgery at Mayo Rochester, we need a chuckle once in a while. After post-op Jello, I was handed a menu with a phone number to call to order meals. I was to avoid salty food, and I noticed little hearts next to many items on the menu as we sometimes see in restaurants. Yes, next to bacon, pizza, soups and the like. Wow! They are heart healthy foods at Mayo! Who would have known? Then I noticed a very faint line going through the hearts. Some things are just too good to be true.

@walkinggirl I thought the food at St Mary’s was pretty good. Of course, by call for my meals I learned about what me diet was now supposed to be like. No one else told me anything about recommended changes. 🤣🤣. “No you cant have that Italian ice…too much fluid.” 🤣🤣

I was at St Mary’s for my surgery and an overnight stay. But I was on clear liquid diet so I never saw the menu, however my therapist had a cochlear implant put in at St. Mary’s and she said the food was awful 😣 hopefully you like it!
