Has anyone out there tried Histotripsy for tumors in the liver?

Has anyone out there tried Histotripsy for tumors in the liver? What were the results, where was it done, and most importantly did your insurance pay for it, or did you have to come out of pocket for the procedure?

Has anyone tried Histotripsy? My husband has Cholangiocarcinoma and has done well with chemo and now is down to one liver tumor left from 15 before. We are going to try Histotripsy in a few weeks to get rid of this one final tumor. Our insurance won’t pay, but we are going to pay out of pocket. We are still seeking financial help but it has been difficult to find. Either way, has anyone had this procedure and how was your outcome? It’s a lot of money, but we hope it will destroy what is remaining and that it will continue to fight off future cancers which is also why we are doing this.

Hello @sujane and welcome to Mayo Connect. I see that this is your first post on Mayo Connect and that you are following Dr. Liu. Are you currently being treated for NETs?

Please share as you are comfortable doing so, a little about your journey with NETs. I look forward to hearing from you.

High interest in Histotripsy so I hope patients continue to report their experiences and thoughts on this treatment for NET Liver Tumors. I live in SoCal and there is a company offering this treatment, but I am Leary of their expertise and lack of knowledge of NET disease specifics. We need more realistic choices for excellent tumor reduction besides debunking surgery and interventional radiologic seeds. I am one of many patients investigating less invasive approaches to NET disease control.
This is an important venue for patients to find their answers. Thanks!

I am also interested in Histotripsy. I was diagnosed with HCC in January this year, and got resection in Feb, but with R1 margin. I have been on Atezo immunotherapy since mid April, but my Oct MRI found there are two small “LR4” lesions showing up. I just added the Avastin (bevacizumab) to my immunotherapy treatment a few days ago, and wonder whether Histotripsy is a good option to get rid of these two lesions. If anyone has utilized Histotripsy, would you please share your experiences? Thanks!

@jiamgmx24: RE: Histrotripsy Update: Seattle WA Swedish Hospital has a Histrotripsy program with NET Liver patients. If you are interested check with them regarding patient criteria and specifics of their program. I am hoping for their success and that Histrotripsy will be approved for Cancer Hospitals nationwide. Best to you… Bette

Hello @jiangmx24

I see that @dbamos1945 has already provided you with some information regard Histotripsy and a location on the west coast. If you live in the Midwest, you might want to consider University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Their team of researchers developed this technology. Here is information about U of M's program, https://www.uofmhealth.org/search-app?search=Histotripsy

Has your oncologist suggested this treatment for you, or are you just investigating right now?

Hi Teresa,
Thank you for your suggestion and information! I live in Midwest. I found U Chicago has Histotripsy capability, and just made an appointment to see an oncologist there in early December. Hopefully it is suitable for me to utilize histotripsy procedure to get ride of my tumors. It would be great if someone had used it and share the experiences and outcomes. Thanks.
