Have MAC with pseudemonas
Hello - this is Pam in Sudbury, MA. I have not been on the site for some time now, but was when I first came down with MAC in 2015. Recently I have been getting many pseudemonas infections and my lung doctor wants to try the inhaled drug "Cayston". I have several questions: 1. Has anyone also had numerous cases of pseudemonas and how did you deal with it? 2. Has anyone used Cayston, how long did you use it, and did you have any side affects? The doctor feels that even though I can get rid of the pseudemonas taking the drug Levofloaxin (which I have been taking on average every 2 to 3 months), it now comes back because it is either getting resistant to the Levo or that it really never goes away and just sits there until something urges it to rear its ugly head. Has anyone used other therapies to keep the pseudemonas at bay, such as taking in the nebulizer albuterol once a day, and the saline solution once a day?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pam

Scoop, you might have misunderstood. I do airway clearance everyday, sometimes twice a day, using active breathing, Aerobika or exercise. With Mucinex and plenty of water I clear the mucus. I use saline twice a week as a precaution, to chase any bugs trying to settle in my lungs.

What is your routine for use of the Aerobika in terms of times a day used before cleaning or how often you clean and or disinfect and how you disinfect?. I am especially curious because of how well you do and what I recently read that Dr. Falkinham said about what he found and didn't find (bacteria or no bacteria) in the use of the Aerobika by BE patients.

Do you remember which IV antibiotics you were given in June? Do you feel they helped enough to make it worth it or have your Pseudo symptoms fully come back? I guess that would be 5 months ago.
hi irenea8 , my name is pam am I username is p1000 , While I was in the hospital in June for six days, I was on IV antibiotic called Vancomycin & Zosyn after six days, I was released with a midline to continue at home for 10 more days. with the Zosyn .. I had a terrible cough and it definitely seem to help the cough. But when I went back to the doctor after two weeks and took another sputum test, I found out five days later the results came back pseudomonas .. I now continue to do airway clearance two times a day And then use the aerobika .. I think with pseudomonas you have to keep it under control and with the airway clearance it does help.. stay well and have a happy Thanksgiving happy holidays, Pam from Staten Island 🙋♀️😎👋🏻
Thanks Pam. I know the Zosyn is commonly used IV for Pseudo but not usually Vancomycin. I wonder why they included that. So you did the 16 days but still tested positive for Pseudo afterwards. That is not uncommon. I think people only get rid of Pseudo if it is caught early enough and the treatment is aggressive enough. I guess what I wondered is if the IV treatment made any real difference for you in terms of your pseudo symptoms. Do you feel it knocked it back and if so how long did that improvement last? Were you doing airway clearance prior to the IV treatments?
irenea , it stopped the cough that I had for over a year and I did have coughing up blood at times because I have bronchiectasis which causes it. I I have bee nebulizing since last August 2023. And I do feel that it does definitely help get the mucous out .. Would you mind if I could reply privately. to you ? i’m not really very good with computers and I find it easier !! lol I would gladly answer any other questions you might have that could help .. let me know ..🤷♂️ i’m going to be putting my Christmas ornaments up today it’s a little early, but I see everyone is doing it earlier !! have a great day 😎 looking forward to hear back from you 🙋♀️
Every time I use my aerobika I wash it with Dawn and hot water. Same with my nebs. Once every week or 2 I boil them. I would say after 8-10 uses of the aerobika and 4-5 uses of the neb.
This is Pam in Sudbury. Sue: what is your regimen with Mucinex? Would it help a sinus drip which seems to be constant these days? I am doing the albuterol 2 puffs in am, 2 puffs in pm, followed by 7% saline in the nebulizer. Thanks!
Thanks Scoop - it was I who decided to go the route many of you are taking with the albuterol and saline.. my pulmo is fine with this, but I think after a few weeks of twice a day, if my coughing gets better, I will go down to once a day..makes sense. Pam in Sudbury
Sue - I was using Symbicort also until Medicare stopped covering it... are you getting a good price on the Sym? Or do you buy it in Canada? I use Breo now but I feel the Symbicort was better. Pam in Sudbury
