Traveling to NJH

Posted by busybeans @busybeans, Oct 27, 2022

I've just read that Omicron subvariants are resistant to key antibody treatments for those of us who are immunocompromised. Thinking that I'd had every booster known to man and that I was relatively safe, I made travel arrangements to fly to Denver to see my doctor at NJH instead of renting an RV as I have every six months since the pandemic began. Is anyone else traveling by air right now, or have I completely lost my mind? Your thoughts? I can always cancel...I have two weeks.

@mems

In reply to miloandlisa - I just returned from NJH Feb 4.
We flew out, but fortunately, had a direct flight from Tampa.
No problem at all - but, I know that's always a concern.

In response to mems: Did you end up staying the full 12 days at NJH or did you get to leave earlier? Also, do you mind me asking where you stayed because I am going in May and have been looking into the different hotels discounted for NJH patients?

We arrived Tuesday PM and I was supposed to stay 10 days. They did a LOT of testing the first 3 days. Not a lot was scheduled the following week. Three last days only 1 Dr appointment each day. They were able to squeeze a couple of more important things in for me on Friday because Saturday is a "down time" - - - nothing scheduled at hospital. One test I can do at home with my Dr. and send to them. They were very accommodating with the schedule and I got everything done.
We stayed at the Mauven. Check hotels before for discounts. Many of the hotels had not received to 2023 discount okay .

I learned that the hotel discounts for NJH patients are very limited in number and get taken quite far in advance.

The last time we flew to NJH (2016), we had no trouble getting the NJH discounted rate at the hotel we preferred. We stayed at the hotel that has parking lot adjoining B&Noble. I think it’s the Courtyard at Cherry Creek. We have stayed there many times and always got the NJH rate. Haven’t been there since 2016, as my doc retired and I transferred care to UCSF—sea level works better for me plus family nearby.

I was there is Oct. 2023. Stayed at the Marriot Residence Inn at Cherry Creek. Very convenient, lovely area and nice Residence Inn and Whole Foods right around the block and Sprouts just down the way. Everything you might want is close including NJH. The medical discount rate was given with mentioning I was there to be a patient at NJH. I think we just let them know when we arrived of that status, you might let them know ahead of time of that and then remind them at check in.???

@hicopd do you mind sharing who your doctor is at UCSF? Are they an NTM specialist? I spoke with the UCSF pulmonology intake and they said Dr Zha is their NTM expert. Do you have any experience with Dr Zha? How do you compare the care you have gotten at UCSF to NJH? I am trying to figure out specialists, insurance, etc., so any feedback you are comfortable providing would be appreciated. I live in Bay Area.

My UCSF doc is not an ntm doc because I haven’t been diagnosed with ntm. I have had great care at both NJH and UCSF but found the altitude in Denver increasingly challenging as I needed O2 for altitude. I believe UCSF has an excellent Bronch/NTM team.

I go every 6 months as well and I just got back 2 weeks ago. I always fly and have never had any issues yet (not even contacting the common cold). I mask up if I hear the first person start coughing but I have been fortunate with that as well because it is a long flight for me and it would be difficult to wear a mask the entire time. I always get a window seat so I can avoid most traffic coming down the aisles, etc.

Can’t remember but think it was maybe $150/nite or so but nearly a decade ago.
