Has anyone had a “blue light treatment” on their face to remove pre-ca
I had a blue light treatment on 11/15/24. It is most unpleasant and my age spots are darker and more spots gave been added. I thought this would get rid of them! I have not begun to peel yet, though, so I am hopeful. This is has been extremely painful. My dermatologist wants me to go this twice. I’m considering saying “no, thank you. Once is enough!”

What do you mean by blue light therapy? I’ve had photodynamic daylight therapy with Metvix, which is not particularly painful, resolves within 7-10 days and yields excellent results.
I called it “The Blue light special” but it’s the same thing you had. Its correct name is “Photodynamic Therapy - PDT Blue Light with ALA” but with me they used Levulan cream. They do use blue lights, thus my nickname After waiting 90 minutes for the cream to absorb I sat with a bank of blue lights wrapped around me for 17 grueling minutes. Very painful, I’m on day 6 & my face is beginning to peel. But I have all these dark spots and red spots that appeared on day 2. My original question had to do with anyone’s experience -like yours. Did your age spots, dark spots and blotchy area go away, peel off. What exactly do you mean my “excellent results”. Describe those. Thank you!
Hang in there! I did this a few years ago, and it was brutal – but ultimately totally worth it. You’re about to be in the worst part. Basically my face peeled off, but with it all the pre-cancerous stuff. My skin never looked better than it did the two years after that treatment. At some point, I’ll be brave enough to do it again.
Thank you so much for the encouragement. I'm not peeling much yet. I'm on day 6. The peeling happens over and over again, right? for, like, a month? How long until this was over and done. My dermatologist wants me to do this again in January. It's very hard for me to have a two week window with no commitments. I was instructed not to leave the house for 72 hours. No make up until day 7 etc etc. Thank you for sharing your story!
Hi! Looking back at photos of myself through the process – I had intense redness, stiff skin and peeling for about 10 days and then a little peeling for a while after that. Days 3 to 7 were the worst. Maybe yours is not as bad because you didn’t have as much pre-cancerous stuff for the levulan medication to react to? Or your doctor is taking a gentler approach. I would definitely follow his advice and do it again in January so that you get the full benefit. I want to do it again!
Thank you’ this is VERY helpful. Both your experience and your advice. Thank you! My face IS better. Not a ton of peeling just flaking! I was told it actually takes a month!
My results were the same as you described - elimination of precancerous lesions, red spots, blotches, etc., as well as general “rejuvenation” of the skin area treated. The major difference was that the cream applied (methylaminolevulinate) was activated by sitting in outdoor daylight for 2 hours. This treatment is less painful and resolves more quickly than the indoor blue light treatment.
Oh my! I did not an option like this was available! The indoor blue light is incredibly painful. The outdoor treatment sounds far better. I will ask my dermatologist about this. Thank you.
If you do a Google search for Metvix or for photodynamic daylight therapy you’ll find YouTube videos which illustrate the treatment procedure.
