Forteo and weight gain

Posted by me75 @me75, Dec 21, 2023

I’ve been on Forteo since my surgery 14 weeks ago and I have put on 20 pounds and I feel so uncomfortable and depressed . Is there anything else that would be as good to take with out the weight gain? Waiting desperately for help 🥲🙁

@me75 . I started Tymlos in June and have gained 32#! Primarily in my belly. The sugar cravings are horrible! I don’t have any answers and am frustrated because I know about nutrition and portion sizes and protein intake but I can’t seem to follow a proper diet. Weight gain was not a side effect noted during clinical trials and so far several of my doctors have an explanation. For me it’s caused a lot of anxiety and depression as well. I know this problem has affected others as it’s been posted. If anyone who has also had a weight gain and has some explanation and solutions please share!!

If you are using the SAD diet or standard American diet, especially when post menopausal then that may be part of the issue.

I find the ketogenic lifestyle to be very useful. We used Dr. Eric westman's protocol to be the simplest and best. He has been using it with patients at Duke University for over twenty years.

I have been trying to stick with a plant based diet. However it’s the sugar cravings that are uncontrollable which is definitely unusual for me. I have an appointment with my pcp in January and an endocrinologist (initial appointment) in February. Hope that either of them can help me to manage my weight more appropriately

Hi @ymv, I'm going to my endocrinologist in January. I will see how she can help me, and I will let you know what she tells me. Thank you for your response

Does anyone know if there are any interactions between Forteo and weight loss drugs like Wegovy or Zepbound?

Yes. With my frustration over this weight gain and loss of my waistline, I did research. It shows the semaglutide accelerates osteo/ bone erosion.

I’m moving to Prolia after 18 months on Forteo and already looking at liposuction for this forteo jelly roll.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks! I appreciate your response. I think it is in part because people skip meals on Wegovy because they aren’t as hungry. I’m going to go forward and make sure I’m still getting enough protein, etc. I heard back from my doctor who said: “No direct interactions with the Forteo and Wegovy of which we are aware
Some diabetes/weight loss medications (possibly the GLP-1 agonists such as Wegovy) can be "bad" for the bone. The jury is still out on whether and how significant this is with this group of medications. It is an area of ongoing research. If the benefits of using it outweigh the risks, then it can be used.”

I have been on Tymlos injections for 2 months and am rapidly gaining inches in belly fat despite the fact that I am careful with my diet , I walk, and have never had a weight problem.
Like you, the doctors and the pharmacist have told me "studies have not shown weight gain"
I know my body and I know this bloating/ increase in waist is from the Tymlos.
Were you able to find out any info about how /when this weight will come off?
yikes - I hope that when I stop the drug the weight (belly fat inches) can be lost!

For your sugar cravings please try a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in your water before eating a meal or even after if you forget. It has zapped my sugar cravings! Also eating protein at every meal will help with your bones, muscles, cravings, etc.

I've had the same issue after nine months of Tymlos. 65-year-old make. I definitely notice some extra weight around the abdomen, and it's not my diet. It was enough that my jeans were suddenly difficult to button after I took them out from storage. I assume that it will come off later. I will say that it makes injections a little easier.
