Most people quit their job under Big3?
Hello member. I just got diagnosed with Mac and so many thoughts are going through my head. My life just turned upside down.
My pulmonologist brought up Big 3 treatment and reading all the horrible side effects, I'm wandering if most people had to quit their job. Thank you

I did 28 months and another 12 and never missed a day. I worked at home on occasion until the pandemic and the worked at home until hybrid schedule 3 days on office and 2 days home office. I asked about our partial disability as described in our employeer insurance manual but never got an answer
I was on the big 3 for 20 months. No side effects.
Thanks for your responses. I guess I'm referring to those people who suffered bad side effects and if they were able to still work.
I'm so worried that I would need to quit my job and I cannot provide for my family.
Miloandlisa, where you on the Big 3 daily or 3x a week?
Rick, I have read prior posts of yours so understand you have cavitary disease. Were you then on daily Big 3? I have nodular bronchiectatic MAI with cavitation (C-NB) so daily Big 3 is being recommended to me with IV Amikacin for first three months. Wondering if you had similar protocol and what those side effects may have been like for you, acknowledging we are all different in terms of our responses to these drugs. I have read that daily Big 3 is much harder to tolerate than three days a week, so am curious about the experience of those that have done daily Big 3 and particularly with the added Amikacin IV.
maliko, I too am newly diagnosed and have not started antibiotics yet, so I cannot give feedback on side effects. I was told by my doctor that many do need to take some time off of work at least to start the drug protocols and get adapted to the regime. I don't know what resources might be available to you in this regard but some employers offer disability coverage (though this seems to be getting rarer and rarer); in CA we have a short term disability program through the state. Also, side effects may depend on what the drug protocol is, whether daily or 3x a week. I have read 3x a week is more tolerable than daily.
Hello. Thanks for your reply. I'm currently in hawaii and even thinking of relocating to california as I have family there. Are there any reputable pulmonologist in california who specializes in mac treatment? Thank you
All 3 daily for 28 months with Amikacin IV for 12 weeks and Arikayce at 18-23 months . A 6 month pause then AZ 3x per week with daily Ethambutol and daily rifampin. Yes, I do have a cavity 3x6 but it has scar tissue so it's permanent. I did not tolerate either amikacin or arikayce well at all.
I was on the big 3 for a year, no side effects, worked everyday through the entire thing. The only way I knew I was on it was having to refill the scripts and remember to take the meds. I hope you fare the same.
I've been on the Big 3 for 6 years, Inhaled Arikayce for 4 years and recently added Clofazimine. I never had many side effects from any of the medications that prevented me from going to work. Sometimes the symptoms of MAC kept me home a day or so and in my mind I'm thinking how much worse off I'd be had I not been keeping things at bay with the meds.
