My Experience on Evenity for Treating Osteoporosis

Posted by arlene7 @arlene7, Jul 7, 2020

Thought I would share for those considering or on Evenity for osteoporosis:
Afer much research and discussions with my GP and Cardiologist, I have decided to start my treatment with Evenity injections. As with all drugs, there are many side effects. My biggest concerns were stroke and heart attack. However, considering that I do no have any history for either, for me personally, the benefits outweigh the risks. As my GP said to me, "if everyone only thought about the side effects of the drugs, no one would be taking them".

I had my first injections (subcutaneously in the back of each arm) on June 30th. The nurse that administered the injections discussed the drug in depth, along with all the possibilities that may occur. She also mentioned that for all the patients that she has seen, none has had any side effects.

The injections are once a month for only one year, so I'm hoping that this works well for me and I can improve my bone density, especially in my spine, where I need it the most.

My endocronologist has also prescribed Hydrochlorthiazide for my idiopathic hypocalcemia. I have an appointment with an allergist this month to confirm whether I still have an allergy to sulfa drugs, since this drug contains sulfa. Apart from this I take D3 orally and try to obtain additional calcium through foods not supplements. Trying to walk 3-4 times a week and will begin with a few weight bearing exercises.

My journey began September, 2019 when I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. After waiting to see three doctors, receiving three denials from insurance company for Evenity, which took several months, I am hopefully on my way for a favorful outcome.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Osteoporosis & Bone Health Support Group.

I'm on my 7th shot of evenity, and hoping it increases my Bone Density to the Point i can have a Spinal Fusion done on my back. Hopefully this will correct the curve in my back. ( Scoliosis)
Has anyone gone through this process? and if you have, please let me know how you did?

Thank You for any help!
Joe

Thank you for your response. Everyone seems to know a lot on this message board! My surgeon recommended I start either Tymlos, Forteo or Evenity for 6 months, however the Endocrinologist managed the drug. We both had concerns about increased blood calcium levels on Tymlos since I had a parathyroidectomy 10 yrs ago but have been normal since then. My blood calcium did go up to the edge of normal range but it was the side effects that made me stop. The surgeon would be happier if I tried Evenity-( Reclast never mentioned) but again I am wary of the side effects I read about- like joint pain and cardiovascular effects. I’ve asked my cardiologist if he has any comments. Thank you for your comments.

@4deborahrb I have a heart condition and did Evenity anyway (at least for awhile, I stopped for other reasons). I consulted two cardiologists and they didn't know anything about it, honest. One just googled!

The ARCH and FRAME studies are behind the cardiovascular warning for Evenity. One study showed no difference in risk for heart/stroke between Evenity and placebo and one study showed a small but statistically significant difference with alendronate (Fosamax) but it has been suggested that might be because alendronate has a slight positive effect.

If you do consult a cardiologist maybe they can google those studies!

This group was very helpful for me when I was making a decision about starting Evenity a year ago. Like most of you, I had many concerns about the possible side effects. Now that I finished the 12th shot a few weeks ago, I am happy to share that the shots went very well and my bone growth was better than I had expected.
Previously I had taken Fosamax for many years, and Reclast for a few years. They slowed down the bone loss, but I was still losing about .1 in the spine, hip, and fermoral neck nearly every year or two for the last 18 years. I'm currently 72 and very petite. My doctor had told me I was the perfect target for osteoporosis.
With Evenity, I had no annoying side effect from any of the shots, though a few months I think I was slightly more tired the day following the shots. After about 3 months shots, I made sure that the shots felt room temperature each time so that they wouldn't sting. If they still felt rather cool, I would warm them in my hands. I also asked that the nurse inject the shots slowly because that seemed to help avoid any slight soreness the following day. I had both shots for the month in the same arm, then switched to the other arm the next month, then back to the first arm. I also drank lots of water,
After the second month, I had a blood test which showed my alkaline phosphatase was above the normal range. Concerned that it could indicate liver issues, I had an isoenzyme blood test which indicated the liver was not a concern. The bone component of the test was what was high, likely indicating that the Evenity was doing its job for the bone growth. The numbers all returned to normal by my next test a few months later.
The results of my recent DEXA show a T- score increase of 20.7% in the lumbar spine, an increase of 9.8% in the total hip, and 6.0% in the femoral neck. The spine is now in the normal range, the hip is osteopenic, and the femoral neck is still in the osteoporosis range, though slightly improved. I will be having a Reclast infusion in about 10 days.
I hope this positive information is helpful to someone in this group who may be facing the decision as to whether or not to start Evenity. For me, it was a wise decision.

I have osteoporsis. How do you deal with the pain in your buttocks when sitting or laying down to relax or sleep. I am petite and have lost 1/2 inch. 5 ft. now. I will be 70 yo soon. I have not wanted to try the meds because there was so many side effects. I am a caregiver to my husband. Thx. for sharing.

@sillyblone osteoporosis does not cause pain so you might want to see a doctor to see what is causing the pain with sitting or lying down. Do you have fractures in your spine or other spinal issues?

It could possibly be degenerative scoliosis, which can sometimes go along with osteoporosis of the spine. That is what I have and though it is not severe, there is often pain in the left hip and down the leg. I am also resisting the drugs so far. I am 78 and not ready to face the possible side effects. I walk a lot, take bone collagen, calciven and vitamin D

If the pain runs down your leg also you could possibly have sciatica.
