What Distracts You From the Pain?

Posted by Jen, Alumna Mentor @sandytoes14, Oct 4, 2016

Hello!
We share what works (and what doesn't) for us as far as medicines and surgeries, etc.
What works for you to give yourself a little break? I'm presently researching family history from the comfort of my recliner.

@lorirenee1 I have also been finding a reduction in the pain in my feet when I do some simple brain reprogramming, especially at bedtime. The brain is an amazing organ.

@jimhd I have been doing tapping since 08 I think it was . Dr Bob Procter is one of the founders about the brain signals and the meridian lines Tapping .com is a good site to check out . Nick Ortner and his sister Jessica developed the video for Tapping.

I have been researching chronic pain. I tell the pain to go away, I do tapping, I visualize the part of my brain that creates pain, getting smaller. I do this when I am in pain. I see my brain part getting smaller. I visualize the part of my feet with neuropathy getting smaller. I really focus and tell myself that I do not need pain anymore, and that I am ok. After about 5 minutes or so, I find the pain goes away. All of this is based on pain research. It is the brain that gives off the pain signals, and the brain needs to change. Of course, I distract myself with anything I enjoy. I walk when I can, and push myself to walk. I love to read. I love poetry. I listen to music....could go on and on. Most importantly, I am trying to retrain my brain. Lori Renee

That is not an easy task for this impatient brain but I whole heartedly agree with positive distraction. For example, this past weekend was Families Weekend at my daughters college and although pain still existed, I found it more tolerable given my environment and circumstances. HAPPY to report something positive for a change!

What wonderful ideas from such resilient and resourceful folks! I am finally trying to pull together all the writing I have been doing and starting a fictional memoir--when I am writing or researching, time and my pain disappear. When I nap, I take my little gray tabby in with me--she is a loving and silly girl.
Good movies and streaming tv series work great, as do Turner Classic movies. And for sure, my little yoga meditation before bed. I move away from my pain and into my heart. Thanks all!

When I am in severe pain, all I can do is lie down and listen to music. I make sure it is music I know because eventually it calms me down and I find myself singing/humming along with it (it takes awhile but it does work).
If the pain isn't too bad, I try to do my hobby of cross-stitching. If I can't concentrate that much then it is TV time or reading.

I am most distracted by pain when I garden and plant
my multitude of flowers pots! 🌻🌺🌿 Then, care for them. Here are some which I've paced myself in creating thus far. Because it's been so cold...my poor hubby drags in and out of the garage each night until the weather breaks. 💪🏼

LOVE it! Now, of course, I need to adjust my ways of getting it done and realize I will pay the price of pain for what I do. I seek helpers to do the heavy lifting and dragging, and know certain things I'm no longer able to do but, I will never not be involved in what I love so much. In the fall and winter I love decorating for the holidays and making my house special.

Be well folks and enjoy your day! 😊
