First time nebulizing, kind of lost.
I was told to start nebuluzing albuterol and 3% sodium solution. I watched videos and looked at information in this support group. I finally got my nerve up to try it this morning and the albuterol neb went fine. I filled the neb cup with sodium solution and at first it made me cough, I turned off the machine to cough. I turned on nebulizer again, there was vapor but the liquid in the cup just didn't seem to go down, I quit after 1/2 hour. How long does it usually take and what could I be doing wrong?

What kind of nebulizer cups did you use and what compressor? It should go down more quickly than that!
It’s Medline Aeromist compact nebulizer and whatever cup it came with. My doctor put an order in and it was delivered. I’ll give it a try again today.
My doc just recommended I start nebulizing with hypertonic salon a few times a week. My Omron compressor did the same as yours. I think I could’ve spent the day and the cup would’ve had solution left. It had always taken at least 20” to neb the albuterol, longer than most here. It had just 16-17 psi. I ordered a Proneb Max with higher psi and after trying a couple different neb cups, I’m using the Aeroeclipse with it. It’s pretty new for me, but seems to be working well. Both were ordered on Amazon.
Good luck
Sorry for being so ignorant, I reread my prescription and I was putting the entire 15ml vile of saline into the nebulizer, duh…. I was supposed to be using 4ml. So apparently I just tossed 10 days of saline down the drain. I’ll try the correct amount tomorrow. So I have a couple questions. 1. Do you put the open vial in something to keep it sterile? 2. Do you use the baby bottle to sterilize all the neb parts, except the tubing? 3. Is it okay to throw the arobika parts in there too?
Hi, no need to apologize, we’ve all been through this learning experience. I keep any extra saline i don’t use in an empty Rx bottle. Seems safe enough for a couple days. I just put the nebbing parts in baby bottle sterilizer. I’d do anything else by itself but thats me. This process takes time so be patient and kind to yourself. 🤗
I keep open vials in a glass jar with a tight lid, and use within 2 days or toss them. I use boiling water to sterilize the nebulizer cup, not the tubing, at least 5 minutes, but plan to eventually buy a baby bottle sterilizer. Good luck.
@pacathy
How do you know the psi of the Omron? Was that the info on the instructions?
Is the Proneb Max proving to be faster for you?
I googled specifications and found it. I think I found it initially on Omron site, but just took a look and Just Nebulizers has it listed as 17 psi and Macgill has it at 16.. I’d looked when I initially changed my neb cup from one that came with it to the free one Mayo had given me and it didn’t nebulize med. Found out that cup needed higher psi so I bought cups from pharmacy until I needed 7% regularly.
You can call customer service for your machine if correcting the volume doesn’t fix your issue.
The Proneb Max is much faster. I’m guessing your machine would be pretty decent if pulmonologist recommended.
Thank you for your responses, today went well with the appropriate dosing.
Haha. I did the exact same thing. The first time I used the nebulizer I used the entire 15ml vile of saline instead of 4ml. It took me significantly over an hour. I too hadn't read the directions carefully enough. I now buy boxes of 4ml viles on prescription from CVS. When I do use what's left over from the box of 15ml viles, I tend to use them within 24 hours and just cover it with a paper towel along with other equipment. So far so good for me, but if others have cautions/guidance about this ... please do share it.
