Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid
Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

This is helpful. I will try it today. Thank you.
Do you use sinus saline washes? I have long standing sinus issues and it got bad last year. Local ENT sent me to Penn. I’m doing the NeilMed bottle washes twice a day with a steroid added most of time. Even without the steroid, the saline helps. If you do it, remember to say “kaaayyy” as you squeeze the solution in to protect ears.
Good luck
One more thought…I had horrid coughing episodes for a couple years along with a little nagging cough. Azelastine was a big help for the horrid cough episodes, but didn’t stop it completely. It can be OTC or prescription strength.
I went to Mayo due to a lung issue and they started a compounded drug they mix for all the secretions. It has mometazine, Ipratropium and diphenhydramine. I use 2x daily and I have an Ipratropium spray to use for break thru since it last 6 hrs and other 2 are 12. I take a class 1 antihistamine at bedtime.
The little nagging cough was thought to be from asthma (new diagnosis), and the steroid spray stopped it. These work pretty well for me.
Here’s the Mayo description:
“Cough Clinic specialists have pioneered a triple combination nasal spray that uses antihistamine, anticholinergic and steroid medications. Mayo Clinic pharmacists dispense the spray as a compounded formulation.” A combination of sprays in these categories would work so your doc wouldn’t have to order Mayo’s, but is convenient as 1.
I hope you find a solution. That coughing is exhausting.
I can also relate. The symptoms go up and down in severity: post nasal drip, phlegm, wet nose that's not usually runny, but then all of sudden - usually before I can grab a tissue that is never handy - clear mucus will just run out of the nostrils like on a child who hasn't learned to wipe or blow its nose. I refer to it as my Covid nose.
I use saline rinse every day. Helps briefly. Mucus builds up quickly after the rinse. Nothing is helping. No nasal sprays have helped. Only help was prednisone and after two weeks I was as bad off as before.
I hear ya...have coughed since last Christmas...so hard till the phlegm came up. I seemed to still cough but not so hard this past summer...now cough and phlegm are back.... I am using an inhaler and decongestant nose spray at night....but I am soooo sick of this horrid cough. I also have the runny nose.
This is very helpful.
I have had this problem ever since June of 2020. Something happened around that time that left me so weak that I didn't even have the energy to think while I was lying in bed, unable to do anything else. (This was before anyone knew about Long Covid). In retrospect, I probably had had an asymptomatic Covid infection.
Ever since then, I keep several washcloths next to my bedside table, as it only seems to happen at night. The nature of the secretions range from non-stop saliva to thick mucous that I can't easily cough up. There are nights when I choke so much and my secretions are so copious that I go through three washcloths. My doctor prescribed Prilosec, treated me for GERD, and I slept on a wedge for months - all to no avail.
One thing that I have noticed is that if I have any alcohol within two hours of going to bed, my symptoms are much worse. I used to love drinking bourbon before going to bed, but now that I've modified that habit, things seem to be better. For what it's worth....
How much NAC do you take every day? TY!
My ENT prescribed me Ipratropium Bromide nasal spray. My primary agrees it should be a good med to help. Anyone tried it?
