as anyone tried GABA for anxiety?

Posted by raili @raili, Oct 19 5:40pm

I feel that at times my insomnia is caused by anxiety.Since I am already taking temazepam (weaning off of it)I am pretty sure my doctor is not going to prescribe any anti anxiety medication for me.So i am grasping at the straws hereeee somewhat. I can order Gaba on line.Do you think its worth trying?

If you mean Gabapentin I don't think it'll work at all for depression and anxiety. I have been taking it for several years for neuropathy and nerve pain. I also have depression and anxiety I'm taking Effexor as an antidepressant, and I don't think it's working at all.

Hi, @blueopal - I believe @raili was talking about GABA as in what is mentioned here on Web MD, which provides some helpful info on this and some things to watch out for when taking it https://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/gaba-uses-and-risks.

@blueopal, I can totally see why GABA and gabapentin are hard to distinguish. It really sounds like one is a short form of the other, so it's confusing. Also, there are a number of discussions on Effexor in the same support group as this thread, the Depression and Anxiety support group. You may want to check out some of these previous discussions at https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/depression-anxiety/ or do a search on "Effexor" in the search bar at the top of any page on Mayo Clinic Connect. Another option to consider would be to start a new discussion in the Depression and Anxiety support group related to Effexor and depression and anxiety (See "Start a new discussion" a little down from the top left) about what you are experiencing.

@raili - can you confirm if what is described on Web MD is what you are asking about? Have you gotten the GABA you ordered yet? If so, how's it going?

Hi, I received it few days ago and have used now four evenings. No change in my sleeping but more drowsy these past couple days.More like sense of dullness.
I dont like that feeling but will see if my sleep will improve with time and maybe with more sleep I feel better during the day time too. Will give it a month or so.
I really am not expecting miracles either just little ligther mood.

I’ve taken gabapentin and stopped using it because of the drowsiness and blah feeling I had during the day, but I was also taking it during the day back then. I stopped taking it. Then I went back on just 100 mg at night after a fall resulted in some minor fractures of my pelvis (now healed) and I was not sleeping well at all although I also suffer from insomnia and poor sleep overall. Like you, I felt drowsy during the day even on that small dose. I decided that maybe it took some time to be in my system to work and I started taking it early evening at 8 PM instead of around 11 PM, closer to bedtime. That has worked much better for me for sleeping during the night although I still seem to end up getting up for 1-2 hours at some point in the wee hours before going back to bed and to sleep, but it’s curtailed the sleepiness during the day. I don’t know when you take yours, but if you’re taking it late, you might try taking it earlier and see if it helps with the daytime drowsiness.

I’ve used Gabapentin (currently 800 mg/day) for 8 years for anxiety along with Buspar. The Gabapentin does make me drowsy until I get anxious, and then the drowsiness goes away. It helps to dull my anxiety. Somehow, I also feel a help for my emotional stability with Gabapentin. Yea, it does dull me overall. My thinking is slower.

What i am using is just Gaba, not Gababentin.
I believe Gababentin is a prescription drug where as Gaba is just a supplement.
whatever works for what we need it for

Ah, and I misunderstood as I see you are trying GABA the supplement not Gabapentin. Two different things but I hope that you get some relief with the supplement. Gabapentin is inexpensive so if GABA doesn’t work for you, you might ask your physician if you could try gabapentin.
