Iron Depletion in Blood related to COVID?

Posted by stellm @stellm, Jun 11, 2021

Has there been any reports of iron depletion in the blood after receiving the Pfizer vaccine?

I am surprised to be reading about low Ferritin. Totally healthy prior to Omicron COVID positive Dec 2020. My ferritin has been too high for many years. Is there anyone else that has HIGH ferritin? And what did your Dr's do to lower it. Although I get abnormal values, my Drs call it "normal". Prior to COVID they weren't elevated.

My folate has been high since Covid July 2020.
Each time it’s checked it’s high. Not taking any Vit B’s. Dr doesn’t know why. B12 is normal. Could be diet related they say. But high every time. Don’t think so. Thinking about going to a nutrition Dr. Good luck with your ferritin!

I had normal ferritin but the remainder of my lab values supported iron deficiency.
Ferritin is an acute phase protein so can be falsely elevated from
inflammation (I am not a human doctor, I just spent a lot of time researching this and pointed out to my doctor why my ferritin could appear falsely normal, which she then agreed with.

I have had unexplained iron deficiency only since after the vaccines and a booster. I had a hemorrhoidectomy in March 2024 and started iron tabs daily. I got false high ferritin levels. I stopped iron tabs and my numbers have all dropped again. I have had repeated iron infusions. I don't know what to do long term. The exhaustion is crippling.

My insurance will no longer cover iron infusions. I have been deficient since covid in March of 2020, along with other issues. It does get very discouraging. I wish you all the best

How many infusions have you had? Were they monoferric? Monoferric is up to 5X stronger.I'm getting a dose of monoferric on Friday.I've had 3 infusions of the other iron type.I was normal after the 3 infusions last December and now I am severely anemic.Worse than before.I had two doses of the Pfizer vaccine that I got out of desperation in January 2022 just so I could get the passport and be able to go out in public and have a coffee.I did not want the covid vaccines.Up until reading your post,I was under the impression that people were getting better and that I was still here because I was one of the last to get vaccinated. It is so scary that these so called doctors outright deny any connection between the covid vaccines and anemia.I wrote to Pfizer on Monday and they phoned me on Tuesday to take a report. Are you extremely deficient? My hemoglobin is 79 now.

Hi I'm sorry for delayed response I have not been feeling well lately. I never feel well, but have had a harder time than usual of late due to very long work hours. I don't remember what the iron infusions were I had to fight to get insurance to pay for them and now they will no longer cover them. I just take over the counter iron supplements and the hopes that that will help. I am vegetarian everyone just keeps telling me to eat meat, but that's not going to happen. I never had these issues prior to covid and I've been vegetarian since the 80s. I truly hope that you will be able to feel better.

@logsohio I just came into this conversation...how is your husband feeling now? I knew back in 2021 after initial vaccines came out that there was a problem. I could actually date medical issues and labs back to the dates of the vaccine. For me it was more heart related. And people who I spoke to around the country also knew someone who began to have heart issues where there were none before. I currently have lupus and leukemia. I have not had a booster nor another vaccine. I got Covid in 2022 and was put on Paxlovid which was great! I had to stop leukemia meds while on it and I actually never went back on them! 6 months later I was diagnosed with systemic lupus! It seems to me that suddenly there has been an uptick of cancer AND lupus cases - all auto immune diseases. On other groups I see people are taking over 10 vaccines/boosters and I'm horrified!!! They keep saying I'm not showing immunity in my blood. However the question should be: Did you actually get Covid yet??? Maybe your husband needs an autoimmune booster of some sort to jog his body back into a "good" zone...with the lupus came 4 major food allergies (I am 69) critically low blood sodium they almost killed me, I became, and still am, highly anemic. I had restarted leukemia meds and started lupus meds at the same time in June of this year 2023. I believe they conflicted and I was overdosing on two meds with similar abilities. I finally found a top leukemia specialist who also has worked with lupus for over 20 years!!! I saw him once. He's at s medical conference this week. He is will be getting in touch with my lupus doc (rheumatologist) to discuss a Med that can potentially work for both! Right now I am starting my second lupus "flare" and it is not fun. I am currently taking methylfolate, iron and vitamin C to help bring my numbers up. Unfortunately I look ok on the outside (with the exception of losing hair in clumps) so I'm having a hard time getting family members to understand I am not well. My best friend keeps giving me hair tips..people don't realize that hair loss caused by disease can not be made better by combing your hair from the bottom up, changing shampoos, etc etc. It also is not my fault.
I wish you and husband well in the upcoming months and as far as Covid is concerned, wear a mask. Wash your hands with antibacterial liquid after you go shopping and just be smart and don't tempt fate !!

Do attribute the leukemia and lupus to the vaccines?

I had 3 infusions about a year ago, back to donating blood about 6 months ago and so far so good.

Hello, I recently have experienced the same problem low ferritin and low iron. I have been looking for a reasons this is occurring and the only thing is the Pfizer COVID-19 shot. I am female.

Hi, I know this is 3 years later but I experienced the exact same thing and got my Pfizer vax (both) around this time (July, August 2021). I became anemic, and my ferritin was once below the detectable limit. No bleeding (I was scoped) Prior to this, my iron levels had always been on the high side all of my adult life. I'm also looking for answers.

For what it's worth (October 2024), I had a sudden drop in iron, hgb, saturation and ferritin around August 2021, after the Pfizer. I strongly suspected it might be the vaccine because all my life my iron numbers have been on the high side. I was even seeing a hematologist for this. But after the vaccine, my ferritin dropped to below detectable levels on the blood test. I had bloodwork done every 6 months from that time on. Rock-bottom inflammation markers. I refused to take iron supplements or get an infusion because I had no symptoms and I wanted to find out the root cause. I still have not figured out what happened.
