Muscles ache more in ageing
At 76 I keep learning about ageing. My quadriceps started aching a few years ago and I can't seem to get that to stop. I work with a trainer; I use rollers on my leg muscles; I use a theragun vibrator. They all help in the short term but within an hour that stiffness and hurt returns. I'm wondering whether a massage could help. I've never gotten massages in the past. I'm also wondering if this is truly age related or if it is just something unique to me. These aches actually keep me from being able to sit on my heels on the floor. My legs won't bend that far any more. Does anyone else have this kind of problem?

Most muscles run in a compartment...a sack, that is inelastic. It may be that you suffer from a mild 'compartment syndrome' in those two muscles. It's just a wild guess. Long distance runners sometimes develop 'anterior compartment syndrome' of the muscle that causes shin splints, at the front of the tibia. What happens is that, during exercise, the muscles warms and swells, and it isn't always noticed or doesn't always cause problems....until later. When it swells, it cuts off its own blood supply when it wants to swell, but cannot because it has already taken up all the volume outward that the compartment can allow.
Again, it's just a guess. A really good sports physical therapist will know how to help you. Maybe with 'fascial release' methods.

I'm sorry to hear about your sore muscles. That must be very uncomfortable. I don't know much about exercise etc. but I am 78 and I do know that at this age, I have to slow down more and pamper my body somewhat. I sometimes ache also in various areas. When that happens I take a hot shower and put cream all over my body which not only relaxes my muscles but helps with my skin which dries out easier at our age. Also your muscles are getting tired and older and aren't as able to move like they used to. I would suggest giving up the trainer or at least slowing down and give your body a rest before you break something. We don't heal breaks well at this age either. Eating well and drinking lots of water helps also. For some reason, as we age we need to drink more water than we used to. You will feel better when you drink a lot of water. I know I do. Try and stay away from pre-pared foods like TV dinners and McDonald's etc. These types of food have a lot of preservatives in them that are not good for your body and your body needs all the help it can get!

If you are going the massage route, I suggest you find a "massage therapist" instead of a regular massage person. They have been trained in how to relieve certain muscle problems.
In terms of massage, @ksdm has a good point--look for a certified massage therapist. Most are trained in several modalities--Swedish massage, acupuncture/Shiatsu, pressure point release, and more. Ask your trainer, who might know. Sports PT is good too (and also can refer to massage). A great massage therapist will be integrative and enjoyable--and back-up for all and any aches and pains in life. I was a massage therapist in my 20's and 30's...and now I'm a grateful client. Most important--do you like the person, is the environment pleasant, is communication easy, and are you happy with results.
Ai 83 I felt in the best of health and conditioning. At 84, I developed a medical condition, had successfull surgery. But since then, I feel that living is taking a toll each year. As I am 88, I feel blessed to be as healthy, capable and outgoing as I am. But I can't deny it. Everything is more difficult to do. Every task seems to be more of a challenge. Every ache and pain is more harsh. 😊
Getting up from the floor when I've needed to find a package in my bottom freezer requires a strategy.
But still, life is good and I feel blessed.❤️

Hi, I am 77 and my muscles hurt quite a bit. I do deal with Fibromyalgia but I believe just getting older is part of it. I just keep moving. I pick a word to use everyday as my word. Today was “be happy”. It helps to say that through the day. Well, have a good day and be happy. Sheila
