Seeking advice: Liver donation
I’m reaching out because my mom, who’s 45 and has three kids (all born via Caesarean), will soon have to donate part of her liver to my uncle (cirrhosis due to alcoholism).She also has gallbladder stones, which adds to my concerns about her recovery. I’m really worried and want to support her as best as I can. If you have experience with liver donations, especially for someone her age or with a similar medical history, could you share what the recovery process looks like? Are there specific complications or challenges we should be aware of? I’ve come across some intense stories, and it’s left me feeling anxious about what lies ahead. Any sort of advice or input would be appreciated. I am like shit scared for her.

@sparkleprincess0808, Welcome to Connect.
I am a liver and kidney transplant recipient, and I had an anonymous deceased donor, so I have no living donor experience to share with you. I do commend you for reaching out to the Connect community for any members who might have an experience to share.
I have, however, found this article from the Connect Newsfeed Blog. I know that age is not of concern to you regarding your mom's interest in being a living liver donor, but I think that the section, "Becoming a living liver donor", will provide you with some of the medical review and physical factors involved with the evaluation process. I especially like the statement that says, "The transplant care team will answer all your questions and discuss the benefits and risks of donation with you and your family."...

Has your mother taken any steps toward being a living donor? I recommend this link to the Mayo Clinic Living Donor Page:

@sparkleprincess0808, Has your mom spoken to her medical team? How do you feel about going with her so that you can ask these questions?
I had a couple friends family who went through process of liver donation for me. All were turned down for various reasons. I believe mayo is very conservative and will not accept a donor if they believe there is any undo risk to the donor. They will protect the health of your mother at all costs and not take her if there is any heightened ris yo her recovery
