Atrial flutter - Running out of options

Posted by pal @palni, Oct 10 9:03am

I am having Atrial flutter for the past 7 months. Having LA enlargement as well.

Taking Amiodrone and Toprol and Warfrin (Initially on Eliquis).

Drs have tried cardioversion 3 times. They found a LA clot and the procedure got aborted all 3 times. While the LA clot shrinked each time in size, it is not completely gone.

They could not do ablation either because of the clot. They changed me from Eliquis to Warfin and its been 4 months I am on Warfrin.

And the clot is visible only on TEE because it is on the edge of the LA APpendages. Normal echo, MRI or CT is not able to detect the clot.

With the persistent Clot in my case even after 4 months of Warfrin, Dr's running out ideas to fix my Flutter issue. I am also not sure what to do.

Has any one went thru similar experience?

Has your doc suggested a Watchman implant? If that is an option you can then has an ablation. Ask about it.

I was told that they will NOT do ablation with Clot even when you are in Warfrin

Regarding your heart flutter - Are you drinking or eating ANYTHING with caffeine? If so, quit ALL. Coffee, chocolate, Mountain Dew, energy drinks, caffeinated tea.

Is Atrial flutter similar to PVC’s/ PAC’s or more like A-Fib ?
I have had PVCs a lot of my life on and off , feel every one . It’s horrible.
Also had 2 -2 hr A fib incidents very different feeling and very scary .
I’m not on meds just baby aspirin and I take Hear Calm Supplements ( google it ).
I have 7 chronic digestive disorders that kick up the heart ♥️ stuff very bad sometimes. I’m sick every day w/ gut stuff , 10 years .

Have you examined your diet to see if related?

When I was in my 20's and 30's, I had horrible stomach pains and indigestion. After quitting diet colas and other sodas, baked Idaho potatoes, too much fruit with acid, especially raw pineapple, too much ice cream an. I have not had those stomach pains for years.

I have been researching caffeine for awhile now and almost everything I read says moderate caffeine in coffee and tea most like does not contribute to arrhythmias and it can also be good for you. Energy drinks and caffeine added to sodas, colas and the rest are bad news and they add more than just caffeine that interacts with caffeine that makes it worse. If someone has links to scientific studies that says moderate caffeine is bad of arrhythmias then I'd like to read them. I'll plenty of studies if anybody is interested. I myself do not tolerate caffeine and never have. It always kept me up at night and made me jittery when I drank coffee. I quit decades before I every had arrhythmia issues. Both my parents and brother could drink fresh black coffee all day and sleep like lambs.
I have been thinking about post about this for awhile because I am wondering where the information is coming from.

Omg yes , for many years seen FM Dr did Gluten Free , tried Keto , this is a 10 year journey. I don’t eat many different foods at all and never drank soda or caffeine , low low sugar and low dairy ( no milk at all no ice cream for 10 years). Been allergy tested for foods . 6 th Gastro Dr . Even Mayo Clinic testing .
I have 6 diagnoses and tried everything holoistic to RX , take anti anxiety med for years . Don’t sleep well take Ambien still don’t sleep . Every supplement they make under the sun I’ve tried .
Now it’s affecting my Heart ♥️ and starting to get many more pvc and other episodes last year.
I barely can eat much at all .
I never get a day off from this .
No one and nothing has helped.

The info is from my own experience. I have posted my story many times. After 7 years of serious episodes when young, I read in a new column someone writing in with symptoms the same as mine and the DOCTOR replied that some people are extremely sensitive to caffeine and that it CAUSES not just worsens the episodes I was having.

I ended up decreasing my coffee to 1/2 cup and discovered it affected me as much as 4 cups. I ended up quitting and rarely had even a minor episode. Also, I had begun being a secretary at this time, and typed engineering specifications back when there was not even electric typewriters. If you made an error, had to white out or start the page over. I made errors when drinking even a tiny bit of coffee, b ut typed lickety split without it.

Now at age 76, I had found haagen daz COFFEE ice cream and was eating it, and within a short time, started to have heart rhythm issues. I do not live in US, so hadn't seen this ice cream in years.

I also am sensitive to many foods. When I eat ice cream or cheese or wheat, I pay the price of itchy skin. Can keep me awake for several hours and then eventually the itching subsides, after scratching etc. About 4 years ago, I began to have inflammation in stomach area. No pain. Just swollen and I am not overweight. It is pouched out even in the morning before eating.
