Only 53 with severe osteoporosis and about to fearfully take Evenity

Posted by songbird18 @songbird18, Feb 24, 2024

I am 53 and just got an awful bone density result. (Spine T score 4.1, hip 3.5). The rheumatologist is going to put me on Evenity for a year but I am so afraid after reading about the dangers of heart attack and stroke. The doctor also told me you can’t get any dental work done, but you never know when you are going to have a tooth emergency. I don’t feel I have a choice but to take it because my bones are so bad and my back is in constant pain. I’m wondering if anyone has been using Evenity and how it has affected them. Thank you!

@windyshores Thanks! You and I seem to have similar fears of Prolia.

Thank you so much for your response. I am glad to hear that you’ve had no noticeable side effects. I’m in a bit of a panic about my bones being so bad for my age and the thought of being on medication for the rest of my life so this helps. I wish you the best!

I am 57 and have osteopenia and need 4 level disk surgery in cervical spine due to degeneration of disk and arthritis. I was told i need to start something early for my bones so that surgery will go well. I’m shocked I need such a big neck surgery. I’m terrified but I read you need good bone health for future surgeries. At this point, I have no choice but to take something. I also never take anything and always go holistic first. My life has been turned upside down this week. Never did I think I would be facing such a big neck surgery. Anyways good luck.

@mimidpistelli my neuro keeps telling me I will need neck surgery (stenosis, myselopathy, nerualgia, paresthesias etc.). What symptoms led you to consider surgery? (I don't think I will ever get back to osteopenia which the neuro is not thinking about...)

What medication are you considering?

I totally understand your situation. I was able to take Evenity for 3 months. By that time my side effects became worrisome. I have tachycardia and my heart palpitations became much worse. I felt utterly defeated. I did nothing for over a year then had a bone scan, It was what could be called "lace curtain" bones. That's bad. However, I was seeing a new doctor, highly recommended by his peers and some family member who are in the health profession, and it made all the difference. He thoroughly checked my health history and the problems that occurred with every other bone medication I'd been proscribed. From Fosamax, to Prolia, to Evenity. He told me about Reclast. He said I'd have mild side effects if I was conscientious about keeping hydrated and taking Tylenol. And guess what! No side effects at all! I'll have a scan in 10 months. I pray that Reclast will work. Please try to remember that we are all different. Something that made me ill might be the very thing that strengthens your bones. Just because I couldn't take Evenity, doesn't mean that you won't be able to. Find a doctor who will listen to your concerns. It took me 4 tries, but they're out there.

No noticable side effects after 6 months. If you have concerns about dental work during evenity talk to your dentist and develop a plan good luck. I am 76.

I just did my 6 month injection also. Only side effect I have had is lumps on arms where injected and hurts for usually 24 hours. Although, my 6th month one my right arm still has lump...red and hurts and its been 3 days. But....it gets better everyday!

I receive my 10th Evenity injections this week. I haven’t had any side effects other than some fatigue after the first injections.
I was terrified at first, but it’s been uneventful.
As I’ve said on here before, I am now occupied with being terrified of Reclast which I start in May.

I have been told to start reclast also. Please let me know how that goes. I am on number 6 of evenity.
I have had lumps in my arms and it hurts after injection for a day or two.
Best of luck!!

Update- I finished all 12 sets of injections and a reclast infusion after.. no issues. My BMD improved 10-15% in each area

@daph I finished 12 sets of Evenity injections and have to decide on Reclast or Prolia as soon as tomorrow! I'm 62, did not do anything before Evenity. My Dexa T-scores were: L1-L4 Spine at -3.7/Z score -2.2; with worst being -4.0 (L3) and -4.3 (L4) and left neck -2.9/Z score -1.5. Why did you decide on Reclast and not Prolia?

I took evenity followed by reclast. I have a deca scan scheduled for December. Hoping it improved my bone density. Honestly, I wish I started it sooner. I thought I could change my lifestyle and improve. I have lifted weights since college, taught aerobics, and have been very active. I have eaten well, too. I don’t know what I thought I could do extra. My sister is a hiker and gardener and carries her tent and gear on her back. We have osteoporosis just as our parents and grandparents did. We did everything right, but here we are. I wish I woke up to reality and took medicine to stop the decline sooner. Good for you for being proactive. Best wishes.

@mayapath2health
Please let me know what you decide. I have to make the same decision in 4 months.
