I take Motegrity for my SIBO, I am also constipated.
It is my understanding that you need to give it a two week break every 3 months ( your body gets use to it)
Have you tried Magnesium citrate or glycinate?

I take Vitacost's 400 mg magnesium citrate at night with calcium, and vit D for my bones. It helps with my obstipation. How to balance the constipating effect of supplemental calcium with its also being necessary for bone strength is challenging.
My GI rx Motegrity, but I find occasional Miralax and a stool softener plus enjoying plenty of fall fruit is working for the moment.
Can you say more about the quarterly 2 week break from Motegrity?

Got my info from Dr. Mark Pimentel’s book “ The Microbiome Connection”. He addresses the issue of prucolapride may lose effectiveness after a few months and to go on a “drug holiday” on page 111.
I highly recommend his book!

Hi everyone. I'm a 68 y/o male with CIC. After trying everything (and I'm active, at the gym 6 days/week), nightly Miralax followed by bisacodyl every three days does the trick. This has been called the "Mush and Push" approach.

My concern is taking bisacodyl regularly. I've read that it will damage the colon's natural motility, but have seen no studies proving this. Anyone have any feedback? Mag citrate also helps but is hard to manage. Thanks all! Joe

Is anyone taking Motegrity for constipation? How do you feel? Does it eliminate the gas from slow transit? Are you feeling any long term side effects ?

I am not sure whether to start taking Motegrity. I am currently using MiraLAX for chronic constipation but am having a difficult time adjusting dosage to obtain a good bowel consistency. ( They are either too soft or just right) I am also experiencing a lot of gas.

Advice?

@alamedakaren
I have taken Motegrity for chronic constipation. I started with 2 mg and it worked quite well. Sometimes too well. I cut down to 1 mg as needed.
Before Motegrity nothing worked. Miralax had stopped working a long time ago by then as well as the senna laxatives. I also was taking Amitiza.
At this point I don’t need to use it very often. I use Amitiza 25 mg twice a day and Senokot-S as needed- maybe twice a week. I may also use Prunelax- but I have to spend the next day near a bathroom.
I realize I’ll always will have problems with constipation- poor motility. I just try to develop a feeling for what is needed and when.
The gas problem has improved- I also have become more aware of foods that make me gassy and foods that are tough to digest. This year I stopped eating beef and pork- I really feel much better.
It’s worth a try- Motegrity really improves motility.

I can recommend a home remedy for constipation that my mom always gave me. I'm 78 and still use it. It's natural but may be a little harsh. It's a teaspoon or more if needed, of baking soda (the kind you cook with – Arm and Hammer) dissolved in a glass of water. Drink the whole glass. You may want to squeeze a little lemon juice in it to make it taste better. It tastes awful, but it works. Stay near the bathroom. It works fairly fast. By the way, this also helps get rid of gas and bloating. After it works, try and drink a lot of water to keep from being dehydrated. The nice part is you aren't getting any of the chemicals, additives that they always put in these kinds of things. This remedy is all natural.
I hope this helps.

I was prescribed Motegrity (amongst other things) and never took it. I tend to lean more into a natural approach. So, I found that Magnesium before bed (glycinate and citrate) help me the most. They also help my body aches and sleep. I drink a lot of water through the day and follow a diet consisting of well cooked vegetables, protein and complex carbs. Yams are my best friend-I start with one every morning. On occasion I will have apple/prune juice with my meals in very small amounts. I hope this helps and good luck!!

I have similar issues. The medication recommended, like you, really gave me unpredictable results. The following is changes I’ve made that helps me the most. I adjusted my diet which has helped more than any meds the doctor prescribed for me. I cook 3 days worth of steel cut oats with 2-3 tablespoons of chia seeds(or flax) added while cooking. One serving is 3 heaping tablespoons with 1/4 C. frozen blueberries/banana &/or frozen mango, cinnamon and grated ginger on top. Some mornings I change it up & have 1/4c plain Greek yogurt with same toppings. Increased vegetable/fruit to 5 servings, water intake and walk approx. 3-5,000+ steps daily. Metamucil wafers 2x per week when I’m tired of ‘the oatmeal’.
Magnesium citrate at night. Hope you figure out what works for you & get some relief. Best of luck to you.
