Has anyone gotten complete numbness in legs from gabapentin?

Posted by carolinlv @carolinlv, Jul 18 8:47pm

I started taking gabapentin for peripheral neuropathy almost a month ago. Over the last week my legs often go completely numb from the knee down. I can only assume it is the gabapentin. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it normal? I don’t have a doctor’s appointment for another six weeks, and I would like some first-hand information from other gabapentin users.

Thanks for this information again! I live in Las Vegas and use a Walgreens so I would imagine this is something I would be able to do.

It’s almost 3 months since my post and I can no longer blame gabapentin unless it has long lingering side effects. I stopped taking it a few months ago, and I still have the numbness and tingling in both legs and feet. I would think compression socks might help. I weaned off both bisoprolol and my statin also a few months ago (with my doctors approval after good blood work) thinking it could be one of those. I guess not🤷‍♀️ The only thing I have left to blame is Losartan, which does list it as a side effect. I can’t quit everything though so looking into an alternative blood pressure med with my doctor at my next appointment.

I hate drugs. I ask for the lowest dose I am taking gabapentin 300 mg and duloxtene 20mg and alive or aspirin. I think statins are the reason I have to use a walker. numbness in lower and pain in upper legs. I have diabetes2 and diabetic neuropathy a sore on my foot that won't heal and bad hip arthritis. so, I am on a second round of antibiotics, and headed to an orthopedic dr mid month for a possible hip replacement.

I agree on the drugs! I was supposed to take 900-1800 mg of gabapentin A day. I never took what I was prescribed. I didn’t like the way I felt on 300 mg. I can’t imagine taking that much! Every single drug I take or have taken has had some awful side effect or two attached. I have zero quality of life right now. I just finished my seventh round of antibiotics since January. Everything that happens to me from the tiniest cut to a pierced earlobe (yep, tried to put a pair of earrings in for the first time in six months and gave myself an infected earlobe🤦‍♀️) causes me to need antibiotics. My laundry list of tests and doctors for the next three weeks is pretty daunting too. Two MRIs and one CT. Pretty sure the one MRI is going to say I need to have my rotator cuff fully repaired. The second MRI is for my back. Trying to figure out why I have chronic back pain. Already had the other shoulder done. It was the worst three months of physical therapy I’ve ever gone through. The CT is for an Ascending aortic aneurysm. Pray every year that it hasn’t gotten any bigger. And that’s October for me! I’m really sorry you’re going through all this. Your problems sound very painful and hard to deal with. I have seen people come out of hip replacement so happy they’ve had it done! I truly hope yours is the same. Good luck to you! I hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

Sam sorry you are going through so much too. I have been online all day, researching. I have diabetes2, diabetes neuropathy, severe hip arthritis, dr doesn't understand why my hip hasn't cracked off. I can't stand on my legs for long, just enough to get to the bathroom. I am in constant fear I will fall and break my hip. I am 76 y o. I pray that all of us seekers of reversing these medical problems find a way to heal. no fun on a walker. I see an orthopedic dr on the 15th I've had to wait 2 mos. my mouth is bothering me now wonder which drug is causing that.

I’m a month shy of 73 so I know what you’re going through. I’ve had osteoarthritis for some years now. I’m never anxious for those DEXA scans. Doctor wanted me to take a drug for help with bone density, (can’t remember the name, sorry.) but I refused it. Another one with the ton of side effects. I’m hoping you’ll be off the walker after hip surgery. I can’t stand still for long either. I’m better with motion, but not that great with that either. We are a mess, aren’t we?😭😭

I just never expected this. my grandmother and great-grandmother both broke their hips on my mother's side. it is genetic, and my father had diabetes2 I guess my uncle did too and had his legs amputated. my grandfather all three my father's side had ms and was bedridden for 15 years. my odds are not great.

No, you can’t think that way! Those family members were generations before you and so much has changed in the world of medicine. My daughter has a very serious auto immune disorder and I carry it genetically as bloodwork keeps showing it every year, but as yet it hasn’t affected me nor my other daughter. We’re not doomed to be like our other family members, you’re going to get that hip fixed and get away from that walker before the end of the year! I’ll be praying for you!
