Oral Lichen Planus - my new dental treatment plan...
I am so frustrated with my current dentist. I am loosing teeth - six in the last year and another currently needs to be pulled - also have a partial they keep having to adjust and/or remake as the anchor teeth are now gone. I requested he refer me to "someone else" either another dentist or maxillofacial specialist, etc. I told him I was willing to travel. He referred me to a periodontist in a larger town 20 miles away. My first visit was yesterday and I'm hopeful. I'd previously been told that my gums and/or bones would not be supportive enough for implants or even dentures. This periodontist said one thing that he feels would work for me is a denture and use perhaps three implants to secure the the denture in place. He wants to first get my OLP in better condition and then do cleanings every 3 months. I'm to use Dexamethasone rinse four times a day. He also agreed that the one tooth that was questionable with the other dentist is loose and needs to come out. Luckily it is not an anchor tooth. Are there any of you that have been in this situation, i.e. have OLP, weak gums and bones that have had dentures with implants? Appreciate the replies.

Thanks metta. I'm glad to discuss Lyderm gel with the "new" dentist/ periodontist but I'm not scheduled to see him again until December. He said my regular dentist can do the next scheduled cleaning and they will do the next one three months later. I can see some "calming" of the LP after six days using dexamethasone mouth rinse and Triamcinolone 0.1% Dental Paste. I'm not sure if it would be very productive to present a change in treatment options just yet, but I'll keep this in mind when my next visit comes up. It won't hurt. Thanks again.
@apondee I just squeeze a small drop of the gel on the tip of my finger and rubbed it n my gums - a drop for one side of my mouth and a drop for the other side. Alternately, you could squeeze some gel on a QTip and rub the QTip on your gums and inner cheeks (wherever you have the inflammation). I prefer to use the QTip method of applying the gel.
Many thanks!
Below you mention MD said take Calcium, did they tell you amount, and fact that you also need high Vitamin D? We also need B6 for mouth health, this can be checked in bloodwork. My Rheumatologist does comprehensive blood work at least 2x a year. I also work with an Epidemiologist, who upped my calcium significantly because although it was on point, parathyroid was a little high and she said my blood was pulling the calcium from my bones. With just several months change my bone density went up. I take 1200mg of calcium daily and eat calcium rich foods, I also take 2000Lu of vitamin D daily.
gracenad. My MD said to take 1200 mg calcium daily. They did not mention vit D but I know it is necessary for absorption. I'll check my blood work for B6 levels.
I love that OLP has become more recognizable by health care folks. When I first began having problems no one knew what it was. I finally went to a medical school to get a diagnosis. Yesterday I found some good articles and trials on OLP. One was from Brigham and Women's Hospital. Thanks for the good information.

Are you in MA? I get all my healthcare at Brigham, superb care.
gracenad. No I'm not in MA. Glad you're pleased with Brigham.
I was experiencing loose teeth, especially molars, had a couple out and then started my own research as dental advice wasn’t working for me and was very costly .
After completing normal oral hygiene 3 times per day ( clean teeth mouth , tongue with toothpaste and gargle with listetine then rinse with water . )
I then ( with an electric toothbrush applied organic coconut oil to teeth and gums gently for several minutes . Afterwards , do not rinse just spit) do this at least twice per day and must be constant for life . . Overtime my loose teeth became more secure and my mouth healthy . Also alternate coconut oil to olive oil one day per week . It works for me 🙌
My teeth are worse. Just had two more pulled. One implant covered over before the tooth could be put in. No suggestions or anything to do. I’m at a loss along with my teeth.
@jalice Losing your teeth is a real problem in many ways! Does your dentist have you on a treatment plan? Tell me about it about it! Has the dentist treated OLP before?
