Falling for no apparent reason: Any ideas?

Posted by callalily74 @callalily74, Aug 11, 2016

I'm 75, active, female, and constantly falling for seemingly no reason. I just fall! Three times already this week. In one fall, I split my ear and required 8 stitches. No dizziness, etc.

I need falling prevention classes in Seacoast NH. I am getting very worried that one of these falls will result in serious injury. Perhaps I need some kind of testing. Tomorrow, I'm going to an ENT doctor who was referred to me by a doctor at the Urgent Care Clinic who said my ear was infected. The ENT receptionist said maybe he'll refer me to an audiologist or optometrist to do balance, inner ear testing, etc. Does that sound about right to anybody who knows what I'm talking about. Remember, no lightheadedness or dizziness, etc. I take several medications for depression, anxiety, cholesterol, etc, but my mind does not feel foggy or cloudy.

Please help me find an appropriate doctor specializing in this issue. Or a suitable class or program. I am getting scared now. It happens too much. I only was really hurt once so far when I split my ear when I fell, but I know it can happen any time now and maybe disable me, or worse.

Please help me. I'll be here to see any posts all day today and am free to answer any questions you may have.

You may have a disease called psp which I have. You fall lots your hand writhing has gotten worse over the years and your speech is gotten slurred. Good luck as I saw lots of Specialist in Alberta Canada and after spending one hour with lady from Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale arizona, she was able to diagnose me.

Good Luck

About 6 years ago I fell several times. I would walk up to a curb to step down and suddenly fid myself on the cement. It wasn't just curbs. I came around the corner in my house and fell against the front door. There were other instance as well. I was taking Cymbalta for fibromyalgia and checked its side effects and falling was one. I weaned off of it and haven't fallen since. It was VERY difficult to get off of. I don't know what you are taking but many medicines cause falls. I would review my meds with my doctor or pharmacist.

I have taken Cymbalta for many years for muscle aches and chronic depression. I have also fallen for no apparent reason, once I fell as I was having a pleasant conversation with a friend in the doorway of our home. I Wilkie to wean off of Cymbalta but I struggling with that process. Can you tell me how you weaned yourself from it, how long it took, and any advice that might be helpful for me. Thank you!

Every time I skipped a dose I got nauseous and would continue taking it. I landed in the hospital for the second time with serious side effects from Cymbalta and made up my mind to get off it one way or another. The first hospital stay was for serotonin syndrome and the second for low blood sodium. My primary care provider prescribed Ondansetron, an anti-nausea drug which helped but didn't completely eliminate the nausea. My friend who had undergone chemo told me to chew ginger gum. It took about 2 weeks before I quit completely. I hope you have success.

Thank you! It’s the brain zaps that are the worst for me! I’ll give it another try. My doctor suggested that I begin by taking 30 mg instead of 60 for a month and then begin taking the 30 mg every other day for a month, scaling back gradually until I could quit altogether. I did get to 30 every day. But, couldn’t reduce the dosage any further. Thanks again! I’ll give it another try.

I take lacosimide for seizures and unsteadiness, dizziness, poor balance are all side effects as with most anti-seizure meds. I have very poor balance and tip over all the time (like the little guy on his tricycle on LaughIn !)
So far nothing but a bruise or two but have to be very careful-

My own experience is using integrative Naturopathic advice along with my MD's. + my massage therapist. Perhaps you too could see a Naturopath and/or Massage therapist and/or integrative MD for a holistic view of your health and why you are falling. Staying active and doing exercises that target body coordination were very helpful for me along with checking for balanced biochemical conditions. I work at eating an optimal diet. I suggest throw out processed food and sugar go organic and heavy on the veggies and quality meat. Good luck hope trying outside the box helps??!!

I was taking 30mg. My doctor told me to up the dose to 60mg and 2 days later, I was in the hospital with serotonin syndrome. I am sensitive to almost all medication. A couple of my friends are taking 1800mg of gabapentin, for example, but 100mg causes me to be light-headed feel weak.

I think you need a neurologist. There are neuro conditions in which falling like you describe are the initial symptoms. My brother in law had one of those and his only symptom was falling down for no apparent reason. Please get it checked out before you fracture a hip or seriously hurt yourself!
