Can cooking odours be a trigger for an exacerbation?
Just got back from hospital after back to back exacerbations…..COPD/Emphysema…61 years old stage 4…curious if cooking orders can be a trigger for another… appreciate any input….thanks and have a blessed day.

I stayed with my daughter for a while after Covid and I noticed when they roasted onion, green and red peppers in the oven, the smell would come through the air conditioning, and I became short of breath.
I do have food sensitivities to all these things and more.
Thanks!….and understandable…..we were canning vegetables the other day…..the vapors that came from the boiling canning vinegar were unbearable….they too made my wife short of breath…..have a blessed day
Hi,
Yes it can. Everything that is fried, baked, etc. bothers me so much. Sometimes I can't go to restaurants. We have to put the exhaust fan on high at home, and I have to stay away from the kitchen. Fun way to live, isn't it? I need a bubble to stay in.
Take care and I'm sorry you too, have this horrible disease 😔 ❤️
Thanks so much…I have not yet gotten to that point yet but I’m now at least aware it’s coming and perhaps can avoid another exacerbation…my prayers are with you and hope you have a blessed day….
Yes, we can all have different triggers. We can even have triggers to things that make our lungs twitchy that we can’t smell (I have a very blunted sense of smell due to infections I had several decades ago and have this problem). It’s good to know your triggers and try to minimize your exposure to them. Sometimes I find a good quality, close fitting mask that is breathable can help reduce odors that might otherwise trigger me. Having a great HEPA air filter air cleaner and using a hood that vents outdoors above the stove can also help. Our kids bought us HEPA filter air cleaners that are so quiet that we can barely tell they’re operating. The ones they bought are Rabbit Air, but there are many others out there. Another reason I like the ones we have is that they are very low profile and can be mounted on the wall if you prefer. (We just put ours on the side of the room where they are unobtrusive.)
They certainly are for me . Especially stove top cooking .
Will aggravate my asthma
