Why does driving make neuropathy of feet worse? Have spinal stenosis!

My pn is extremely mild, rarely have symptoms, idiopathic. However, when I drive a significant distance, there is always a flare. It's not while I'm driving but at night trying to sleep. I get tingling in my feet but worst are the cramps in my toes and especially the ankles. For the life of me I can't figure out what it is. In checking around, I've seen that lack of blood circulation and dehydration can cause a flare. I do stop every 3-4 hours but I NEVER sit that long, never more than an hour. And I drink much more coffee on a long drive. That's all I've been able to figure out.

Had similar issues. I got hand controls for my car. Had to work with state Vic rehab office, but they paid for drivers training on hand controls

My right foot works the gas and brake pedals great, my left foot is the bad guy. I had to quit a great job as I couldn’t work the left brake pedal properly, and when your landing on a 6000ft runway at 120knots, ya gotta get it stopped.

After a long dinner in a restaurant my feet often stiffen up & the numbness increases making it difficult to feel the pedals. I have to get my legs up to get the blood flowing again soon after the meal…not an easy task - or let my wife drive.

When we go out to resturants i rate the chairs, some at fast food are eat and leave others are friendly 60 minute chairs, enjoy your meal: Some totally cut off the leg blood flow so i never go back:

We just have to protect ourselves and be aware.

Hello and thank you for
bringing up hand controls for driving.
I am considering going for the drivers rehab/test but was told the fee is $500 and insurance won’t cover this.
I have had axonal polyneuropathy for several years that has gradually worsened and I haven’t driven for two years.
This of course is restricting and depending on others to take me everywhere is getting old.
I would be interested in finding out how you were able to get this paid for and have you actually had the hand controls installed? If so, was it difficult to adjust to this way of driving?
I’ve heard mixed reviews.
Thanks for any info you can share!
