Kidney numbers dropped

Posted by redmax777 @redmax777, Sep 19 1:13pm

Hi, my kidney numbers dropped from 36 to 28 in about seven months
Any answers? Creatine 2.5 my primary care physician panicked, but the kidney doctor reviewed my tests and didn’t panic? See you in two weeks appointment

@redmax777 as you know they fluctuate a lot and the creatinine-based eGFR is especially unstable, my doc said (and my experience shows). The Cystatin C test gives a more stable and often better version of the eGFR so maybe you could ask for that. Mine was higher and stays around the same value while the creatinine based eGFR bounces around between 36 and 49.

Ok, then another test no one told me that they fluctuate.
Thanks just cut down my stress level

Hello Redmax777
In my view anytime kidney function gets into the 40s, just be watchful. Based on my experiences
1, Switch to plant protein diet, why ... because plant protein is soluble as against meat so the nephrons will not get damaged and you will get more mileage from your kidneys.
2, Walk as much as you can during a day... stay away from acidic food etc (eg Beer .. ha ha)
In my case I lost 2 gfr /year for quite some time towards the end of 7 or 8 year the GFR nose dived and eventually I got a kidney transplant.
Genetics has a big role in this Kidney function, kidney failure most likely a function of mutation of some of the renal genes that get passed on from generations. In my case most likely It came from my grandmother, I cannot prove it as there are no records....(just fyi)

@redmaxx777 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You have seen a couple of good responses here already.

As you have no doubt read as you peruse through other threads, the values can fluctuate, but we want to look at trends. Dehydration, exercise, time of day, different reporting lab, all these can affect our resulting numbers. Also, if you have a change in medication, or are not feeling well due to a cold or flu, it can affect our test results.

Are you aware of the cause of your kidney disease? The two leading causes are uncontrolled/un addressed high blood pressure and diabetes. Other factors can be long term side effects of some medications, polycystic kidney disease, lifestyle choices. If at all possible, getting the underlying cause under control can certainly help us give our kidney disease a "fighting chance". I will be interested to hear your story!

Mu numbers are "off" from time to time. My PCP just waits and does them them in 3 wweeks. He is very chill about it all. This keeps me calm, too. The response of @gingerw is spot on.

BUN of 58 is dangerously high. Are you sure that you are looking at BUN? That sounds like a eGFR number. I can't imagine that your doctor didn't send you to the ER if your BUN is 58

OK- I was in End Stage Kidney disease for 10 years and that's the kind of reading I was getting back then. I don't have an explanation for your reading. I guess go with your docter and see what the next result is. I did live quite well with those kind of readings and even worse than that (all the way up in the 90's for a while) for more than 10 years so you will probably be ok also. Maybe the blood sample you gave was hemolized or you were temporarily dehydrated or some other thing that caused an anamolous result. Let us know what your next blood work shows
