Which specialist should I seek treatment from for osteoporosis?

I am guessing that the rheumatologist did look at the book later.
He perused it while I was there. Also, he does seem to have an inquiring mind.
I wish McCormick and doctors would collaborate, too. For the benefit of the patient.
If someone had told me 10,20,30 years ago that I would be receiving monthly injections of a new drug (Evenity) and then an infusion of another, slightly better understood drug (Reclast), I would have laughed derisively.

I know. Wish I had listened to my doctor's calcium recommendations 20 or 30 years ago. Never took it seriously when I was young.

I would definitely watch the free Stronger Bone video by Kevin Ellis on YouTube before going to a doctor to just be put on the dangerous bisphosphonates !! You will be way better informed. Kevin’s program has changed my journey completely.

@whilloba the video I watched by Kevin Ellis makes clear that for some, medications are absolutely necessary.

Can you be specific about ways he says bisphosphonates are "dangerous"? The part I watched said that they should only be taken for 5 years.

You can go see an bone specialist in the Arthritis dept or you can see an Endocrinologist who does bone work.

Or you can go to an osteoporosis specialist if you are in New York at the Hospital for Special Surgery. The testing was extensive and comprehensive for potential underlying conditions. For example, my severe advanced degenerative disc disease was diagnosed by that extensive testing

Or you can go to an osteoporosis specialist if you are in New York at the Hospital for Special Surgery. The testing was extensive and comprehensive for potential underlying conditions. For example, my severe advanced degenerative disc disease was diagnosed by that extensive testing

Can you recommend the osteoporosis specialist you saw at Hospital for Special Surgery? I have been there before for a shoulder problem and thought about going again for osteoporosis l

I was seeing an endocrinologist and a rheumatologist. The rheumatologist made me mad with a flip comment about my bones, so I gravitated to the endocrinologist. He was less interested in me and didn’t have time for me. I took Dr. McCormick’s book with me-to give to him - and he didn’t even look at it. Or at me.
So, back to rheumatologist
who did look at the book and seemed interested. He kept it.
To be fair to the endocrinologist, I know that the senior partner just retired and the endocrinologist who I see is overwhelmed with diabetics.
So, it’s not just about what their specialty is, it’s about their level of competence, their degree of interest in the disease, how crowded their practice is.

interesting...you're right about interest/area of specialty. I tried to book a consult with a fairly high level endo (since so many here see endo docs for their osteo) and just as I was about to fwd records from my primary care, they abruptly canceled my appt, stating they don't focus on osteo issues. I was really surprised, but I guess it's not that unusual.

interesting...you're right about interest/area of specialty. I tried to book a consult with a fairly high level endo (since so many here see endo docs for their osteo) and just as I was about to fwd records from my primary care, they abruptly canceled my appt, stating they don't focus on osteo issues. When I asked one of my specialists for suggestions in looking for osteoporosis treatment in another state he said usually people go to endocrinologists or rheumatologists. He had known a couple of ob/gun's who were really good, but that was rare. He said the key was to look for a doctor with a subspecialty in management of bone disease.

Has anyone had any bad side affects from Reclast?
I’ve had it once and had very bad aching feeling in my body. It lasted maybe I week.

I started my osteoporosis journey with a compression fracture of my spine so I’m went to an Orthopedic doctor. He ordered I MRI after seeing my poor dexa scan and checked it out to see if anything else was going on. He very quickly prescribed Tymlos quickly and I’ve taken it almost 3 months. I’ll go back for a 3 months checkup soon. My Rheumatologist also takes an interest in my bones and offers suggestions for exercises.
