I have moderate to considerable loss in both ears with right being worst. Over the past 12 years I have had Phonak, Widex and now Oticon which is supposed to have the latest technology and what a lot of audiologists in the area seem to be recommending these days. I don't know if they are the best (very pricey) but they are more effective than the widex which were 6 years old and , as you mention the technology is improving among all the brands. I recommend finding an audiologist (as they have more training than a HAS) you trust and follow their advice. All any aid does is amplify the sounds and some of the more advanced brands are better at filtering sounds, background noise and adding features like TV compatibility, clarity. supressing unwanted noise e.g. sirens, dogs barking, etc. My hearing is not severe enough to qualify for cochlear implants
If you don’t mind me asking is your new hearing aid Oticon Real? I ask because from a hearingtracker email I subscribe to I got an offer of a free trial through an audiologist of this hearing aid. I likely have severe hearing loss in both ears and currently use Phonak Audeo aids that are nearly 4 years old. At my last check a month or so ago after my asking if any new aids would make any difference my totally trustworthy and honest here in the DC area said lets see next year after a couple of new rounds of hearing aids. I am tempted to take the free trial but wonder if it is worth it. I am 83 and think that I would pass a cochlear implant screen. Thanks for any thoughts.
My oticon aids are Real1. As my hearing aid store was able to get me "demo" models I saved about $3000. I am told there is no difference from regular full price except there is no warranty or repair coverage and the vendor offers his own warranty which covers a bit more. The aids are much better than my 6 yr old widex's. Clearer sounds. I suspect each year there will be improvements in all aids.

I started facing problems in listening 3 years back and I got this from my genes. My parents also use hearing aids, which is somehow not a big deal for me. But I have recently paired myself with ELEHEAR. It has cutting-edge AI-augmentation that is perfect for oldies. I got for my parents as well.
Hi there! If you're finding Mayo Clinic's options to be expensive, you might want to check out Hear.com. They offer a range of hearing aids and have various pricing options that might be more budget-friendly.

Hi Julie, I also am in the severe hearing loss category and looking for good aids. Medicare has set up tru hearing aids program but been frustrating to work with them. They won’t give me details in writing on trial period, warranty, and cleaning details they say is inclusive in package BEFORE I purchase. Seems very much a scam. Really in a qualm as to where to go and get good service. Any one here worked with Tru Hearing?
I would try a university or hospital with an audiology department. I went to the Ohio State University Speech and Hearing Department and was fitted with excellent hearing aids 40 years ago.

Most hearing loss tends to be progressive over time, especially if it is sensorineural hearing loss. SNHL is more common than conductive hearing loss that tends to not change so much. 40 years is a long lifespan for a pair of hearing aids. You must take very good care of them.
My hearing loss has changed and it is worse now and I have Behind-Ear-Phonak hearing aids that have a Digital Handy Control that turn on the sound and lower the background noise in a restaurant or airplane. I was also a member of the non-profit group Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA). An excellent group and found there were many folks like myself. They had a hearing loss too. Hearing loss is an invisible disability and older folks who are losing their hearing who refuse to wear hearing aids or cochlear implants suffer with mental problems since they never converse with others and stay home alone. HLAA gave me support to speak up when I could not hear well. Hearing people think people with hearing loss are not paying attention or are stupid.

Great tip! I'm an electrical engineer who has followed hearing aid technologies for 20 years and was wondering how Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been applied to hearing aids especially to improve performance with noisy backgrounds like a big busy restaurant etc. Even normal hearing individuals will eventually benefit more and more from human sensor assist technologies that can literally make us super human. Many animal and insect species have better hearing and vision capabilities than humans. Likewise, today's robots are already performing "super human" tasks. Just think of how this $500 a pair competition into state of the art hearing aid technology is going to make the big $5,000 a pair hearing aid companies sit up and take notice! The Over The Counter (OTC) hearing aid revolution is indeed in full swing and can only benefit all of us in the future.

To Hedy,
Have you gotten newer satisfactory aids since that pair 40 years ago?
The Phonak behind the ear hearing aids I am now wearing are 25 years old and are still excellent.
