I have moderate to considerable loss in both ears with right being worst. Over the past 12 years I have had Phonak, Widex and now Oticon which is supposed to have the latest technology and what a lot of audiologists in the area seem to be recommending these days. I don't know if they are the best (very pricey) but they are more effective than the widex which were 6 years old and , as you mention the technology is improving among all the brands. I recommend finding an audiologist (as they have more training than a HAS) you trust and follow their advice. All any aid does is amplify the sounds and some of the more advanced brands are better at filtering sounds, background noise and adding features like TV compatibility, clarity. supressing unwanted noise e.g. sirens, dogs barking, etc. My hearing is not severe enough to qualify for cochlear implants
If you don’t mind me asking is your new hearing aid Oticon Real? I ask because from a hearingtracker email I subscribe to I got an offer of a free trial through an audiologist of this hearing aid. I likely have severe hearing loss in both ears and currently use Phonak Audeo aids that are nearly 4 years old. At my last check a month or so ago after my asking if any new aids would make any difference my totally trustworthy and honest here in the DC area said lets see next year after a couple of new rounds of hearing aids. I am tempted to take the free trial but wonder if it is worth it. I am 83 and think that I would pass a cochlear implant screen. Thanks for any thoughts.
My oticon aids are Real1. As my hearing aid store was able to get me "demo" models I saved about $3000. I am told there is no difference from regular full price except there is no warranty or repair coverage and the vendor offers his own warranty which covers a bit more. The aids are much better than my 6 yr old widex's. Clearer sounds. I suspect each year there will be improvements in all aids.
