Kidney transplant

Excited to share that I got ‘the’ call on Saturday evening and got a new kidney Sunday morning. Long recovery but best thing that could happen 😆

@maggieinfp. Hey Maggie, congratulations! May I ask why you said you will have a long recovery? I'm still in pre-evaluation mode and trying to get a sense of the journey. -- Dave

Hi Dave, I was originally told 5-7 year wait ( i had no living donor as all family in England) and got on the list 13 months ago do there is hope.
There is an incredible amount of follow up care with trips to the hospital twice a week for a few months (110 miles for us to hospital). Bit overwhelmed right now as post surgery and they giving me masses amount of info when all I want to do is sleep lol.

@davem It's not so much that the recovery is long. As @maggieinfp said, there is a lot of follow-up, labs, and appointments especially during the first year post transplant. Actual recovery from the surgery itself varies from person to person but, overall, I would say it's around the standard 6 to 8 weeks. Praying that your pre-evaluation goes well and that you are able to be listed and receive a kidney soon.

@maggieinfp That's quite a ways to go back and forth for your appointments. Any way you can find someplace to stay temporarily near the hospital at least during these first few months? Also, I understand all you want to do is sleep. You definitely will need the rest in order to recover well. Don't overdo anything and don't try to do too much too soon. Take good care of yourself.
