Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid

Posted by danny2022 @danny2022, Dec 18, 2022

Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

Could you describe the taste you have? I’ve had metallic turned bitter taste in my mouth for almost a year. And, have post covid syndrome.

My taste is normal. I don’t have any metallic taste.
I had a Cold with high temperature for a few days [about 2 months ago]. It may have been mild COVID, but I don’t have any symptoms now, except the post nasal drip [mucus in the back of the nose/throat].
I thought it was a Cold but it was strange to get a high temperature for about 2 days.
Well, on & off for 2 days.

I was referring to your comment that you had bad breath you could taste. I thought that meant you had a bad taste.

I have the congestion, nasal drainage and phlegm in throat a lot.

I see what you mean.
The bad breath part, isn’t so much a metallic taste.
It is hard to explain what bad breath smells/tastes like, inside the mouth, I just know it is there now, because I have smelt this coming from other people, during my lifetime.
And I never thought I would suffer from it, but here we are.
I can tell you that the antibiotics have already got rid of the bad breadth.
The mucus side of things is now beginning to reduce.
I am now on my 2nd day of a 5 day amoxicillin course.
So, I have Saturday [today], Sunday & Monday left.
I will keep everyone posted on my progress. 🙂

I also suffer from constant mucus, choking for over 2 years. I can relate to acquiring this after covid vaccine!. After seeing ENT, cat scan, endoscopy and over year of prescription still have it (was diagnosed with LPR, silent reflux). I have tried diet, humidifier, laying upright and never getting relief. I went back to gastrologist for 2nd opinion he wants me to get a bravo test to determine if it is LPR, I am somewhat hesitant because of my breathing issues (severe mucus). Any input on this? I have never read any message that someone found relief???

I have been dealing with this long haul covid cough and flem nightmare for two years now. All 5 of my specialists have said the exact same thing to me: come back in 10 years and we might know what to do. I think they think they are being cute, but it is not funny at all. It is a daily nightmare.

I also went down the lpr/reflux rabbit hole. Had the bravo test. They found some inflammation down by my LES. They biopsied some tissue near my LES (lower sphincter). Turns out I have reflux, which I knew I had already. However the ENT said because there was no damage up by my UES and my throat looked normal to them, they didn't think it was LPR, or at least didn't see any signs of it. Also PPIs didn't do anything for me either. I just have constant post nasal / throat mucus that seems unrelated to my reflux. I can't say whether you should or shouldn't have the bravo done, but I'd ask them some serious questions about whether it's worth trying the study if PPIs didn't change your symptoms.

I did have long Covid & it made my asthma worse. I have phlegm, sometimes a runny nose, everyday. Water doesn't seem to help. Dehydration can cause that too so I was told to drink more water. I know vague answer from doctor. Also, I take Mucinex DM 1200mg everyday up to 2x a day, fyi, doctor said it's ok to take it that often. Sleeping is much easier, (phlegm doesn't clog my airways) & I also sleep slightly elevated. If you haven't already, go see an ENT Doctor (Ears, Nose, & Throat Doctor). They may be able to help more with the symptoms at least. That's all I can recommend right now. I hope this helps some.

The docs are as frustrated by long covid as anyone and they’re just being honest. Barring some unexpected breakthrough, they are a decade from anything like a cure. The research can barely identify why symptoms are occurring let alone how to address them.

I too have this long COVID phlegm. I have had so many tests done and seen several specialist. It has been a year and a 1/2 for me. No diagnosis for it. Was told to see ENT for like the 5th time. But not sure what would be any different this time. It gets old with doctors throwing darts. It is frustrating to say the least unfortunately with long COVID still being so new, we have to suffer and not have answers.

You sound exactly like me. I’ve had this thick nonstop mucus in the back of my throat since January 2023 after having Covid. Pulmonologist and ENT have prescribed med after med and made lots of suggestions on things to try to do and nothing helps. Drinking lots of water hasn’t helped either. I feel like I’m drowning in mucus sometimes. I wake up each day hoping for a better day but every day is the same. Seeing a gastro soon but not at all convinced that there will be any answers there either. I want this condition to go away desperately.
