Has anyone used an anti inflammatory diet to get off prednisone ?

Posted by michwest @michwest, Aug 30 1:00am

I have had pmr for 2 plus years now and down to 2mg but each time I taper I have had more pain. My goal has been to get off prednisone by November which will be 2 years on it (I wasn’t diagnosed for 4 months). My latest CRP was higher than when I started on prednisone (it has been normal since on prednisone until now). My specialist has given me a month to try a very restricted anti inflammatory diet. No gluten, dairy, sugar, oats, nightshades or alcohol. The diet is a bit difficult but if it brings my CRP down it will be a win. I couldn’t see in the files if anyone had tried diet to actually get off prednisone instead of other drugs offered as steroid sparing. If so I would love to hear your experience. I am also on LDN and Celebrex (would like to get off Celebrex as well). Thanks

I definitely agree that a lot of countries have widespread health issues caused by poor diet including ultra-processed "foods" that are nutrient poor, lacking in healthy fibre, and full of additives, sugar and salt, which messes with our gut microbiome. It's all about making a profit from selling packaged garbage that pretends to be food. And I'd add that high sugar/carbohydrate consumption which causes obesity, insulin resistance and inflammation is another widespread health issue.

But with food intolerances and allergies on the rise, what's good dietary advice for you or me may not be good for others. It's an individual thing. For example, I have a bad reaction to things like turmeric and some seeds, but others say they are a must for them. Just because something is said to be anti-inflammatory doesn't mean it can or should be eaten by everyone.

I totally agree with you that most of our health problems stem from the vast majority of "foods" on our grocery shelves, which in actuality, are not real foods. These ultra-processed "foods" have a very long shelf life, thus equating to more profits for the food mega-corporations. I shop the edges of my grocery store and rarely venture to the inward isles.

My first time with PMR took me 3 and half years to get off of prednisone. I was always fairly stiff in the mornings until I started moving around. Even though my PMR is in remission, I still have some stiffness in the mornings and sometimes a little ache but not real sharp pains.

Do you keep a daily log of your level of symptoms/pain/stiffness along with your dosage of meds?

I started but got lazy. I'm not a good record keeper. This sounds like my situation exactly but I'm still on prednisone 7.5 and mtx 15/week. My sed rate is normal but my crp is in the 3+ range. Did u have relapses.

Yes, I went back and forth between 1mg and 1/2mg the last six months of 3-1/2 years when I first had PMR. I think diet plays a part also and I ate a little healthier with less sugar and inflammatory foods my second time around with PMR six years later and was able to taper off in 1-1/2 years.

I'm trying Extreme keto but have only on this about 18 days. Rough days sometimes but i'm starting to feel better.

Yes, I am using a new diet to help with my PMR. I was on prednisone since 2021 when I was diagnosed with PMR. This is a quick summary of what I did and am doing to try to stay off. I weaned down to 2-3mg prednisone per day. None of this is advice to anyone else......I learn through reading, ChatGPT (looking up studies) and videos from others.

1. Changed diet - Carnivore diet, now since May - I needed to loose weight......down 35 lbs.
2. High Dose Vitamin D - 30K IU/D for 4 weeks, then back to 10K IU/D - this is where I am right now.
3. Exercise - The gym helps immensely. My shoulders, knees and hips are better now.....remember when you start a weight program.....pulling and pushing weight.....take your time....move up slowly. First month was hell....after that it's amazingly better.

Results - I can lift my arms above my head without wincing. I can lift weights above my head.....I could not do this at all before. My hips quit hurting....shoulders are better by 70%....my left knee still has times but its way better than it was 3 months ago.
I am not out of the woods.....but I have been off prednisone since the start of the year. I almost went back on it when I read about high dose vitamin D. I did not go back on!
I am not sure where I am going, but I have decided to make my own decisions as going on more medications was not the answer for me. I still work every day and I am hoping that in the very near future that this will go away. The results are still amazing to me as I was a hurting unit, it was not just mornings and night....it was a struggle every day!

I think we are all very different in this area! I have started and stuck with a low carb anti inflammatory diet since diagnosed. I don’t believe my diet had anything to do with the disease coming on, it came shortly after a bad virus. But I don’t think it can hurt to eat anti inflammatory!

Thanks for the feedback. It helps. I'm 5.9 and 150 lbs was 162 last month before diet. 74y.o. and stood all my life so both knees shot on inside surfaces. The diet seems to be helping my inflammation so thanks again for the feedback.

I am plant-based, dairy free and gluten free. It has helped and I’m finally off prednisone after 3 years. But, I’m not pain free. Greatly improved but still terribly stiff…❤️
