Pneumonia vaccine or not?

I just love that one month, my pulmonology office says, Get the pneumonia vaccine, and many months later says, You can't get the pneumonia vaccine when you have MAC/bronchiecstasis. I need a new pulmonologist but, for now, I sure could use some advice on protocol.
Thank you.

Has anyone known of a young, healthy adult in their 20s to get double pneumonia so severe to be in critical condition? And, it’s not covid related! We have a family friend in that situation and I’m trying to understand. It seems very unusual.

Sounds immune deficiency related.

Really! Hmmm… I hope they figure it out. She’s a little better, but still very ill. She’s at Duke, so they have the resources.

I had a pneumonia vaccine 2 weeks ago because I’ve had pneumonia 3 times and vaccine in 2001 but no antibodies in my body. Dr said(immunologist) never rsv

I think it depends on one’s individual health in terms of being able to take the RSV vaccine. With BE I was told to take all vaccine’s available - flu, Covid, Prevnar 20, RSV and Shingles - and have received all at different times.
I will get the flu and the new Covid vaccine in the fall.

Yes, by thinking they were "not very sick" when they got symptoms and trying to keep going. By the time they collapsed they had pneumonia in their entire lungs and it affected the heart too. This was a med student who "didn't have time to be sick" during finals.

Just because you get any vaccine does not mean you are guaranteed to not get that particular disease that it is given for. That is the goal of course and that is why herd immunity is important.
However, all of us have predispositions of some sort to various illness. Especially those of us with damaged lungs.

Here’s some information from CDC.
“Vaccines that help protect against pneumococcal disease work well but cannot prevent all cases.”

Pneumococcal Vaccination - CDC

I’ve read that the vaccine protects against the most common and serious pneumococcal illnesses.

The vaccines offer some protection for those of us with lung conditions and disease.

Perhaps some people might not be able to take the vaccine (doctor or pulmonologist may recommend against it possibly) but many do get the vaccine for some protection against serious illness and/ or hospital admissions. That’s the reason I get the Covid and flu vaccines too.

Update; our young family friend who had pneumonia and was in critical condition has improved significantly. Very grateful.
