Cancer and travel health insurance: What coverage do you get?

I live in Canada , Why leave Australia ?
We have travelled extensively all over Aus . - took the Ghan and Indian Pacific . Spent months in Coolangatta , Stayed on Dunk Island which got wiped out in a storm . Kangarro Island - a gem . The Barrier Reef and on and on . We loved everywhere .
Had I been younger , I am 84 + , my wife and I would have moved to this great country in a heartbeat .

So glad you have managed to travel so extensively throughout Australia and had so many different experiences, including taking the wonderful Ghan and the Indian Pacific! It is a beautiful country and I live on the west coast in Perth. Indeed, I have travelled in Australia since being ill but given our vast distances and areas of “nothing” in the outback (you would have glimpsed that from the Ghan!) I have carefully kept close to where there are airports plus medical facilities.

I am also currently planning a trip next year to New Zealand as Australia and New Zealand have special reciprocal arrangements concerning healthcare.

The American trips I mentioned were merely examples of leaving to visit another country with extraordinarily high healthcare costs and without reciprocal arrangements.

It is a question of weighing risks and including my oncologist in that assessment.

I do long to visit Italy and Germany again one day but in the meanwhile I stay “close to home” where my health insurance without exclusions reaches.

Wee loved Perth and out trip down the Swan River to Freemantle and Rottness Island . Parts of Freemantle ( The Old Jail ) and downtown buildings reminded me of New Orleans . We were in The Fenian Irish Pub on St. Patrisc's Day during the early stages of Covid - Crowded , NO MASKS IN SIGHT . We almost got stranded in Perth . We were on the last flight out of Perth via Hong Kong to Toronto , on Cathy Pacific Airlines . All flights Mon - Thurs. were cancelled . We spent 11 hours in Hong Kong Airport , keeping our fingers crossed that our flight to Toronto was not cancelled . Finally , we would love to visit Coolangattta again and visit Surfers Paradise just up the coast .

He lives in Adelaide and his company is LuckySquid . His jags are in major fishing outlets .

@clandeboye1 Fabulous! I’m so glad to see that you spent time in Perth and Fremantle! It’s a long way to the east coast, and so many people don’t make it to our neck of the woods. I recently spent a week in Sydney with my best friend from childhood visiting from South Africa. Perth is a smaller precocious sibling of Sydney’s - many similarities. I can relate to the travel insurance issue. I planned a trip to Ireland from the US. I researched dozens of travel insurance plans. The few that cover pre-existing conditions are enormously expensive. I am going to roll the dice. It's a shame that the cost of coverage is prohibitive.

Thanks for your kind thoughts . We were lucky the 1st time we visited Australia to attend a show at the Sydney Opera House - the main theater .

p.s. We are from N. Ireland , 60 + years ago . We lived for 22 years in the USA . ( New York State , Pennsylvania , Maryland and California ) our oldest son was born in Santa Monica , California .
We live in the most beautiful small town in Canada , Niagara-on-the-Lake . ( Lake Ontario ) Across the lake from Toronto , a 1 hour highway drive .

I know and read about people who rolled the dice . They came up snake eyes -- they lost their home . Read about the Canadian snowbirds who rolled the dice going to Florida and Arizona etc for the winter . Same story -- Hundreds of thousands in Medical Bills .

Insurance has so many loopholes that people rarely get claims paid unless they hire a lawyer. Even then, insurance companies have teams of lawyers to fight claims against one local lawyer.

I agree - I responded to a fellow forum member addressing the same thoughts .
My son is a lawyer -- he has seen and heard it all .
Small claims they pay -- Big claims are 1st passed over to their " Claim Denied Dept. " .
