My CRP ( inflammation ) was high at 12 ( it had never been > 0.8) and my MD who is an internal med doctor but also practices alternative and functional told me to take NAC 1200 mg twice a day and just rechecked it after 3 .5 months and it is now 3.6!
Liposomal glutathione may be absorbed better but it’s hard to absorb it apparently. As long as you can break down NAC ( I had heard some people don’t have an enzyme ? Or something like that? to convert it well though) NAC is better from what I’ve read. Glutathione is the most amazing anti oxidant and anti inflammatory we hace in our body. (Taking acetaminophen (tylenol) shuts down Glutathione production in Body for several hours. ). NAC can also thin mucous in lungs. Apparently it was used as far back in 1963 as a drug for obstructive Lung issues.

What specific brand of NAC are you using?

Yes, many years ago, before Mucinex, my ENT had me use NAC, but it was a powder and hard to manage. When time-released Mucinex became available, I was happy to switch. For the past several years I have used both, and find the combination helpful. The NAC also seems to help tame my fibromyalgia

Sue- I won't repeat what I said to myself after reading: "The NAC also seems to help tame my fibromyalgia." The body is just remarkable in terms of the health problems we have and yet it allows us to keep living our lives. Did you ever have a bout with systemic Candida after antibiotic treatment? I had systemic Candida after my 24/7 IV treatment of antibiotics while in the hospital for Legionella and Mycoplasma Pneumonias (both at the same time) in the mid 80's. Thank goodness the Candida was eliminated. However, we thought I was having symptoms of fibromyalgia during the time of fighting off the Candida. Don't have any of the symptoms now.
QUESTION: Regarding mucus....should we always expect to have mucus after we eat and have to huff cough afterwards to help ourselves to clear it out?
I can't tell if my needing to clear my thoat of the sticky substance after eating is due to the hiatal hernia causing overproduction of mucus or if the mucus is the cause of the BE. Of course it could be both???

Aah, Barbara, you said "I can't tell if my needing to clear my thoat of the sticky substance after eating is due to the hiatal hernia causing overproduction of mucus or if the mucus is the cause of the BE. Of course it could be both???" - I'm not sure I can answer your question - unless I have an exacerbation, I get only a little mucus - the only time I get it after meals is if I aspirate food, then I cough up stuff for a few hours - I assume my lungs are producing mucus to surround and kick out the foreign substance.

I have not had a bout of Candida for probably 30 years - since I learned from my ENT to use live culture yogurt while taking meds. (Back then these were only available at the local co-op health food store.) Now I use live culture Greek yogurt with every round of antibiotics (I make my own a lot of the time) and haven't had an issue.

Hearing this, " unless I have an exacerbation, I get only a little mucus - the only time I get it after meals is if I aspirate food, then I cough up stuff for a few hours - I assume my lungs are producing mucus to surround and kick out the foreign substance," is a help.
Two ENT swllow tests in 2023 did not indicate I aspirate food etc. So it very well can be the hiatal hernia causing this daily and nearly constant all day problem of having to clear my throat. I did read that a hiatal hernia could cause a problem of throat clearing. Relief of clearing the gel like substance somewhat comes a half an hour after eating or drinking and chewing gum, a very small piece of gum, tames it down after the half an hour or so has passed.
Now I understand how you are able to be as social as you are....this mucus problem of mine controls my social life at this point. I need to find a way to change that because overall I feel fine....as long as I get a good nights sleep. As much as four times up to visit the bathroom and then a few minutes of clearing the throat so I try to consider that and head to the bedroom early to make up the times of sleep interruptions. Adjustments, adjustments.
Thanks Sue for your time and replies....much appreciated.

P.S. Yes, probiotics during and immediately after antibiotics. I am also taking a probiotic a couple of times a week plus have greek yogurt several times a week for breakfast with banana and walnut flour. Yum. I also have not had the Candida again.....since learning back then to use probiotics.

You all know I don't usually recommend a specific product, but after several missteps in making my own from live culture yogurt from my coop, I get my Greek Yogurt cultures from: bacillusbulgaricus.com
I heat whole milk in my crockpot to 190F, cool it to the indicated temperature, stir in the culture, then put it in my oven at 110F (yes my oven goes that low) overnight. Before my new oven, I would heat two microwave heating pads, place them under and over the crockpot and wrap it in a beach towel to sit overnight.
The next morning, I strain off some of the liquid, then put the yogurt in pint jars and into the refrig. One batch makes 6 pints after the liquid is poured off. If I am baking I will use the liquid in place of water or milk. If not, I mix in a little yogurt and my husband likes to drink it like kefir.
When I am ready to eat it, I mix with my favorite fruit, pumpkin seeds, honey, vanilla - whatever I want. This yogurt is so thick and creamy I also use it for sour cream, and in salad dressings, smoothies, pancake batters...
I sanitize the reusable jars in my dishwasher, but don't feel they need to boil them. The yogurt keeps for about 10 days.
The directions say you can use one cup of the previous batch to make the next one, and I do that once, but the 3rd batch starts with new culture again. I find if I reuse yogurt as the starter more than once, "wild bacteria" sneak in over time and alter the taste.

Thanks Sue. We have a yogurt maker which helps to simplify the process. I found this explanation below for the term live culture yogurt so I guess you can also buy it. My husband gets his starter from Natren probiotics. But will check out your source which looks very good. Thanks for sharing:

When you read a yogurt's label, if the terms 'live cultures' or 'active cultures' are used, this means that gut-friendly bacteria are used to convert the milk to yogurt during fermentation. Check to see whether the yogurt has been heat treated, as this can kill the good bacteria and change the flavour of the yogurt.
