LUNG NODULE 8MM Solid and Spiculated

Posted by 363 @363, Aug 26, 2024

I have an 8mm solid and spiculated which has been followed by CT scans..The last CT advises stable in size and appearance from last CT 6 months ago.. and same size as 1 year ago
However 2 new small nodules have shown up 3mm and 4.5mm and radiologist recommending follow up CT in 3 months..
My question is if the 8mm nodule has not changed is it less likely to be cancerous ...I did have a Pet scan 1 year ago and stated SUV max 1.6 low upgrade FDG uptake..

There are no hard and fast rules here. I suspect their concern is that it appeared within the last 6 months and already achieved a size of 4.5mm. That makes it relatively fast growing. They are being cautious. This could still turn out to be something caused by something environmental but better to be safe. If this was my body, I would want the three month CT.

Thank you for your reply and yes I agree considering the 8mm took years to get there 4.5mm in 6 months is definitely fast growing..hoping of course its environmental, or inflammation. I now have a follow up with the thoracic surgeon as the 8mm cannot be biopsy due to location and 6 months ago were wanting to do surgery on the 'maybe' it is but I was definitely not leaning that way..we will see what he has to say now..thank you again

Thank you..yes ..The one Thorastic surgeon said 30 to 50% cancerous, and another one in the same group said more like 50% but it would involve removing my entire middle lobe as not able to biopsy on the 'toss a coin' it is, or is not..
I have heard of the Biodesix blood test but very unfortunately it is not available in Canada.
NO I have not hear of Target Therapy "Targresso" but I will definitely check it out..thank you so much for mentioning and advise re every 3 months..I only have 58% Lung Function to damage from E Asthma and to remove the middle lobe to know for sure my lung function would decrease truly I cannot afford unless for sure it is cancerous

I also have an 8mm that has not changed in 10years. I developed another one 2 years ago with no change last year. I am also wondering if I should have the CT scan this year. My Lung function is good.

I think that is great that your 8mm nodule has not changed in 10 years..If it has been 2 years since your last CT scan I definitely think it is time for a repeat one just to be on the safe side...happy to hear your lung function is good..thats awesome.

My husband has 7 nodules in his lungs. Only the right middle lobe NOT affected. Nodules are 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and a solid 11mm. Top right lobe has 2 nodules >10mm. One of which is solid.
PET/CT scan will be scheduled once insurance approves. But, he only has a cough and allergy symptoms. His nodules grew within 90days from 6mm to 11mm.

@caregiverwife , I'm sorry to hear that you are both facing this uncertainty, and the stress that goes along with any health issue. It sounds like his team is on top of this; rescanning after three months and ordered the PET scan.
When I've faced similar situations, I try to focus on what I know, not the speculation that's swirling in my mind. It helps me from jumping to the worst-case scenario.
Our lungs are sensitive and react to many things. Are you working with a pulmonologist? Have they talked about trying to biopsy the largest nodule? Have his CT's shown any lymph node swelling?

So far his "Team" just consists of Me and his Primary care doctor. Blood work shows WBC abnormally high, plus other very low numbers, he also has beginning emphysema. Doctor wants us to come in after the PET/CT scan to discuss plan going forward. Yes, there is a lymph node swelling in the right lung near fissure. Will ask if we should include a pulmonologist at this point. But, interestingly, he has no symptoms other than an occassional cough.
