Body vibrations when falling asleep or waking?

Posted by cricketlips @cricketlips, Jun 2, 2022

After many google searches for the reason I feel vibration in my head, shoulder and arm just before falling asleep and waking, I found nothing that satisfactorily explained it. Of course anxiety seems to be a common explanation but there was nothing specific enough to help me. I am currently reading Incognito by David Eagleman. It discusses the functioning of the brain as an organ. This morning, going through my routine to get ready for work, I thought of a way to understand the vibrations. Similar to the hypnic jerks we experience occasionally just before we fall asleep, I think the vibrations are intended to arouse me to stay vigilant. Which is the fight or flight mechanism in action. So there is the anxiety connection. Originating in the amygdala. I was thinking Parkinson's or MS but my symptoms don't indicate those conditions, thankfully. It seems counterintuitive to be anxious and sleeping at the same time but the brain can do that. The cerebral cortex sleeps but the life support systems of the brain must stay online, obviously. If you thought you were in danger, sleeping would put you at risk but at some point sleep becomes absolutely necessary. I think the vibrations I have been experiencing are caused by my sympathetic nervous system and not a neurologic disease. Thankfully !

I have experienced this phenomenon about a year ago where I'm turning over during the night (Not sure if I'm awake or hallucinating) and I hear a strange sound near my bed. As I start to pay attention to the noise my body starts rhythmically vibrating from what seem like my foot towards my stomach and my instinct is to try and stop whatever it is. But it continues to travel upward ending in an shocking burst of light and energy in my head. It's frightening because it feels like something from the spirit world but the head burst feels refreshing as though I just got healed of all diseases. This happened again a few days ago where I'm turning over on my side and it seems I hear a noise next to my bed; instantly I feel a moving rumbling type vibration traveling from the bed up over my hips towards my belly and my instinct is to try to stop it because I don't know what it is. It's very physical like something on top and inside of me at the same time. Then suddenly it ends in that burst of explosive like energy and light in my head that feels scary and cathartic at the same time. It feels like something in the spirt world with powers I can't stop. Help please!

I am having a very similar condition. About 9 months ago I started having a vibrating sensation in my upper chest around the area of my collar bones. It would only happen when I was just drifting off to sleep, when briefly waking up during the night, or when waking up. It would never happen when I was awake. It scared me at first so much that I was afraid to even go to bed but over time I realized it didn't seem life threatening and just accepted that it would happen. It happens every single night with no exception. Sometimes it is continuous all night long or comes and goes throughout the night. Having some medical background I ruled out a heart problem (EKG, Stress Test and Chest X ray); most medical issues (normal Hemotology, Chem, B-12 , Blood Glucose an Blood Pressure) and any supplements or medications. I have seen my Doctor and he doesn't know what it is. It happens no matter what position I am in. It always it is same rate but intensity varies during the night and night to night. I can reduce the intensity by stretching and changing position but it only goes away completely when I am fully wake up. I am a female 74 years old, still playing soccer so active, retired veterinarian and not under any stress. Got my third Covid vaccination shortly before signs started and have never had Covid that I know of. I would love to find out what this is and be in any study if one was available.

I get brain zaps that seem to be related to acid reflux.

Do you mean Acid Reflux will cause vibration ?

Hello, I have been looking everywhere for something that has been happening to me but I couldn't find anything, but this thread is somewhat like what I'm experiencing. Maybe someone could give their input on why or what is happening. So sometimes when I sleep for a very long time or don't sleep enough I experience my whole body begin to tingle/vibrate/buzz. It's very hard to explain, but it's not like when your arm falls asleep and it begins to tingle, it's more of a very very pleasing tingling/buzzing. This can happen when I'm almost asleep or if I just wake up in the night and go to sleep again, but it happens when I 'am awake. Also i can kinda intensify it if I close my eyes harder or look up. When you close your eyes hard you can kinda hear it / feel it in your ears and that's the feeling * 100.

Also it's one of the most pleasant feelings I've ever felt, and it might sound a bit weird but it almost feels like an orgasm.

I personally think it has something to do with sleep myoclonus where my mind is awake while my body is being sedated

Hello
Thank goodness I am not alone
I have been having these vibrations in my chest for the past 2 years if not longer I am 55 year old women .I first experienced it about 2 years or so in my chest area and running through my arms and threw me in a panic that i had to call 911 . As soon as they arrived my heart rate was at 120 and they said it was panic attack ok so moving forward it started becoming an everyday thing .The min i go to bed all night long all I feel is the vibration in my chest and at some point I fall asleep just to be waken up with the vibrations. The minute i stand up it will go way. I probably went to the ER about 6 times for this and they don’t know what to say except for you have anxiety (I don’t ) I saw my Dr and he says it’s Gerd cardiologist ruled out my heart .So what is it ? Reading that it could be menopause hormonal changes ,sleeping positions ,or something to do with a damaged neck at the back upper spine, not to mention Anxiety is the first on the list .Im so confused which one is it .I have not had the covid vaccine but I did get covid 3 times . I would say this happens about 6 days out of the week all night long and it’s becoming annoying. I do have an appointment with a GI dr let’s see how that goes .Its just bazaar that it only happens when I am laying down to sleep . I did find that sometimes 3 pieces of tums helps . Magnesium and vitamin D3 b12 (only if it’s low b12 )daily is a must as well .I am just so tired of trying to get answers as to what is triggering these vibrations but I will not give up till I find out , it is mentally making me anxious. Please if anyone has anything that would be helpful please share hopefully anyone dealing with this gets healed .

Are you taking any medications? Sometimes those can cause weird body sensations? You may need to stop/switch if so. If not maybe a neurologist should be your next step.

Good luck to you.

Had you fallen or hit your head prior to the vibrations. That can possibly be a trigger.
Mine were induced I believe by hormone changes that triggered thyroid changes. I have low thyroid.
Counting breaths and calming helps me know they are not life-threatening. I went through massive testing — brain neck spine MRIs a lot of blood work etc. Have you tried taking melatonin ? That has helped me. I do take a lot of vitamins too. The drs tried to tell me I had anxiety and put me on several pharmaceuticals that really did not help and clouded the issues.

Try counting breaths at night and listening to a calming podcast. I know I WAS worried (because I’m a cancer survivor) that something was very wrong. After all the testing came back normal I was able to calm myself w breathing.
Hoping this will resolve for you soon
Take Care

I had all the heart related tests too. Not cardiac related. Mine has lessened over the last few months to maybe 1 or 2 a month and then only about a 2 on scale of 1-10. I do take cholesterol meds and that depletes the body of coq10 so I started taking that several months ago. It is more annoying than scary for me and I might add also that I had a sleep apnea test done couple years ago only to see if it would pick up anything but it didn't. It did show I had mild sleep apnea and I have a nasal cpap. I used it religiously for first 6 months then slacked off. I might use it now about 4 times a week. Not sure why the vibrations have all but stopped but after having them for about 4 or so years, I'm not complaining. I might have 1 or 2 a month in the torso or pelvic area but that's it. I may add though that the upper rib area on both sides of my back has been very painful for a few months. Almost like I overworked those muscles. I have an MRI scheduled next month for back issues. I honestly believe it's a neurological issue with a certain nerve to do with the brain. Ask about a sleep test to see if it'll pick up something, mine didn't though. I also wore a heart monitor for a month and it didn't pick up anything either. I have palpitations bad and had to press a button whenever I had one. Although it seemed like I had a lot of them, he said I only had them 1% of the time. I take 1000mg of magnesium too. Cardiologist recommended it and they have been almost non existent for a few months. Hope you find some answers soon. Nothing like feeling like you have swallowed a vibrator. Also, it's the vibrations that wake people up. Most say they have them upon waking etc but it's the other way around. The vibrations are so strong that they wake you up. Used to, I could turn over and they would go away. They were worse when I lay on my back.

I had exactly the same thing. I thought the dog was shaking the bed as he does sometimes when I’m he wants my attention so I just thought it was him. One day it was so bad I sat up to tell him off but he wasn’t there. That’s when I thought oh-oh it’s me that’s vibrating. There is no visible movement in my body I just feel it mostly in my upper body and jaw.
I’ve just discovered if I move and stretch my neck out it stops for a while but comes back again. When I get up and out of bed I don’t have it at all.
I am 48 do yoga and meditate daily. I’m fit and well and even gave up drinking 2 months ago specifically to see if it made changes (it didn’t but ive remained alcohol free anyway).
I’m sorry you have the same symptoms but also glad cos it’s not just me losing my mind. The rest of the internet is full of essential tremor and Parkinson’s but those symptoms don’t align directly with this experience.
I am having a menopause massage next week and I’m wondering if it’s to do with tension in the neck and the way I’ve been laying down as well as estrogen fluctuations maybe. I have no idea. It’s disconcerting for sure.
