swollen ankles

Posted by elizamail @elizamail, Aug 29, 2016

Has anyone found a cure for swollen ankles. My ankles used to swell up only in the summer time, but now they swell up all seasons. My doctor doesn't have any answers, as he has tested my kidneys and liver functions and he said that all was normal. A naturopath told me that I have thick blood, but still no answers to the swelling. I cannot take fluid tablets because I have low thyroid. Are there any solutions?

I have only 1 swollen ankle which could have been brought on by a BP medication but my doctor is sending me to have an Echocardiogram with Doppler test as well as an Ankle Brachial Pressure test.

I just read your post. I have never heard of glucosamine, but will give it a try. Mayo has some very helpful information about it. Thank you for sharing!

Hello @elizmail
I can't imagine what it would be like to deal with that all the time. Here is a great link to help. http://www.mayoclinic.org/symptoms/leg-swelling/basics/causes/sym-20050910

Curious how has your blood pressure been? Sometimes they are related.

Diet makes a difference. How is your sodium intake?

Thank you @dawn_giacabazi -- I have had swelling in my right leg and ankle for years that comes and goes and it hasn't been high on my priority list specifically because it's not always swollen and I've always attributed to a cowboy doctor surgery in 70s when I lived in South Dakota and tore the cartilage in my right knee. Instead of opening one side of the knee where the damage was, the doctor open the outside of the knee and then said oops it's on the other side and made two incisions on the other side to remove the torn cartilage. I wouldn't have known except I had a spinal tap and was wide awake during the surgery and actually got to watch it in the reflection of the glass cabinets on the side of the room even though they had a sheet between my head and the lower half of my body. I've always felt I would have trouble with the knee later in life.

I've also had gout in the right foot and ankle. Whenever I sit too long or stand/walk too long my right leg and ankle swell up. The good news is when I wake up in the morning it's usually a fresh start an the right leg is pretty close to what the left one is in size. Last week I finally mentioned it to my new doctor during my annual physical and he and team leader thought it was arthritis and they gave me some prescription for Diclofenac Sodium Topical Gel 1% to see if it would help. I've tried it for 3 days so far on the ankle and knee but it really doesn't help. I don't have the aches/pain, it just swells up and doesn't feel good.

Not sure why I had never seen the link you posted but it did give me some more ideas on what the issue is under the related to inflammation section. I think the next step is to get some XRays of the knee and foot/ankle which I think is what the doctor mentioned.
