Chronic relapser on food addiction

Posted by carnes @carnes, Jun 16 4:34am

My addiction, disease has progressed to the bottom. I’m addicted to flour and sugar. Once I put a bite in my mouth I cannot stop! Help. I want to live. There is OA which helps if I work the steps. If anyone wants to know more about it just ask a question. Any question on addiction. Mostly food, if you find you cannot get off sugar and flour. Naturally if you have answers also join. Thank you.

I relate to starting & not stopping, guilty pleasure turns into remorse & the 10 lbs reduction is back can’t seem to stay with it have reduced 20 lbs & then stress or feeding the pleasure center has to happen…. You’re not alone.

Radical acceptance and completion: Part I, find a quiet place without others and distractions. Bring a box of your favorite cookies, a some paper towels and a small trash bag. Sit on the floor, set the cookies in front of you. Talk to the cookies, tell them how much they mean to you. (You could give them a name if you wish , name like Charlie or Trouble or ??? what comes to mind.) Talk for a couple of minutes or until you don't have anything else to say. ( You could do this as a written exercise.) Give the cookies a voice, have them talk to you; or dialogue with them.
Part 2: Take a cookie, fill your mouth with it, chewing on it, and noticing the sensual experience of the smell and taste and texture and all of it. Do not swallow, thank the cookie for all it gives to you even though you don't really understand its hold on you, and then, spit the contents into the paper towel. Clean your mouth with another paper towel, put them in the trash bag. You might desire more, so repeat. Again, experience it totally. Spit the remainder into the towel etc. Do this until you feel a sense of satisfaction. Go to the bathroom and brush your teeth cleaning out the left overs. A little bit will have gone down the throat, but very little.
Comments: If you feel guilt about wasting food, remember, cookies are mostly a treat, not nutrition. Enjoying the treat in this way is just all it is. And it's guilt free and over time, this desire will lessen because it no longer has the element of "forbidden" connected to it. Have heard good comments on the success of this method.

I also am a cancer survivor and during treatment I was so much more aware of what I was eating. At times I drift back to old habits, but being aware of it and know what needs to change is first step. Making the change is harder.

I have same problem with late night snacking. One thing I find helpful is doing something with your hands while watching TV. I crochet, it is hard to munch on food if both hands are busy, also do not want food on my yarn. I make dish rags, nothing fancy and do not need to be accurate, just something to do with hands. Other ideas are coloring, reading instead of TV, anything that keeps your mind and hands busy.

Do you have any hobbies that you can do at night instead of snaking?

I do crossword puzzles and such things, you made me think about my mom, she would always say to me that I need to do things that keep your hands busy lol. Thanks for your reply, I will try harder and work on my cholesterol levels, take care.

The GLP1 weight loss weekly shot (Tirzepatide) works amazingly by curbing your cravings, calming down the food noise in your head, keeps you feel full and satisfied. Brand name Mounjaro for T2 diabetes I, and brand name Zepbound for weight loss. Ozempic and Wegovy are in thep GLP1 category too, but from experience they do not work as well as the Mounjaro/Zepbournd. Good luck with you journey! 😀

Thank you for reading my comment. I really appreciate your response. I’m really trying not to get anymore physical problems. I already have heart, lungs kidney problems and more. If there were a safe pill to take I might try that for sure. I was on thyroid med and that started my voice change etc. I read articles that it causes cancer. Now I’m going for testing because of my symptoms. I’m 78 years old on the 26 th. You are so kind for trying to help. You’re empathic and a good person. Thank you coastgirl.
