Taking apixaban (Eliquis): Any foods or supplements to avoid?
Morning,
I’m taking Apixaban 5mg twice a day and I was wondering if there is any food or vitamins that I can’t take while I’m in that medication.
Thanks

Hi @patrizio, I found a link for you with Drugs.com that gives a list of meds and their possible interaction with Apixaban, (Eliquis). https://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/apixaban.html
I also found this article that addresses food!

How have you been feeling on apixiban? Has it been successful in preventing any more blood clots?
I've been on Apixaban for the past 3 years and i'm fine. The only real question was about the food and the supplements because when i'm asking questions here in Canada, i'm getting so many different answers.
Thanks for th eprompt response
I need to take proteine shake every morning. Can you please recommend some that i can take while keeping in mind that I take the Apixaban.
Thanks
Hi @patrizio, I added your question to the Heart & Blood Health group as well as there are several members talking about apixaban (Eliquis) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) there too, like @johnbishop @katgob @heidi2020 @st1300 and others.
You mention that you need to take a protein shake every morning. Are you concerned that the protein shake may contain something contrindicated with apixaban? You could talk with your pharmacist. They are knowledgeable and easily accessible members of your health care team. They know a lot about drug and supplement interactions.
Hi @patrizio, I take Eliquis (apixaban) 5 mg every morning and evening for a DVT I had about 4 months ago. I usually drink a protein shake every day in the late morning. I wasn't aware of any problems drinking a protein shake if you are on apixaban. I did find some information on a pharmacist site on the topic.
--- Can You Drink Ensure Or Boost While Taking Eliquis?: https://hellopharmacist.com/questions/can-you-drink-ensure-or-boost-while-taking-eliquis
The article mentions Boost and Ensure but I like ones that are lower in calories, sugar and carbs like Premier Protein. My favorite is their Cafe Latte which has 30g protein, 5g Tot Carbs, and 1g sugar.
With MTS I have two stents and am on rx. Repeat ultrasound s have been clear. Will reevaluate filter and Rx at the 6 month point
Great question. I like the Evolve or OMG ones as more vegan. They have 100mg of omega 3 (DHA/other). I thought omega 3's were off limits while on eliquis. Which protein shake would you recommend that is protein based/Vegan
Welcome @gallen36, The only plant based protein shake I've tried was Orgain but it had 1/3 less protein and didn't taste as good to me but that might just be me. When I started taking Eliquis last year I did chat with my doctor about my neuropathy supplements as flaxseed oil capsules are one of the supplements I take. I had to stop them while I was undergoing treatment at the ER and the hospital for the DVT and POE but once I got home my heart doctor and PCP both said it was OK for me to continue with what I was taking. It's definitely something I would discuss with a doctor first.
I had blood clots (bilateral pulmonary embolisms) three months post Covid shot in 2021. Was put on 5mg Eliquis twice daily. I had all kinds of leg pain and issues walking. Changed hematologists who then decided to cut dosage in half. Am now on maintenance dosage of Eliquis 2.5mg twice daily. Am doing much better. I have been told not to take any Omega 3 supplements nor any aspirin products. I take Tylenol sometimes. No special dietary restrictions.
I have a strong bias against Eliquis after having been on it for the past 8 months and just asked my physician to change me back to Warfarin. Warfarin is inconvenient in that you have Monthly Lab work to check PT/INR levels. Sometimes the older drugs remain the superior ones. You can check Eliquis drug information at "Dailymed.com" which is NIH based or use Drugs.com which pulls from three different large data bases for drug information.
