Specialist in New England

Posted by mame @mame, Aug 16 6:57am

Looking for a recommendation for specialist in my area. I live in Maine. I noticed that Mass General in Boston has both a bronchiectasis program & MAC. If I have both which should I choose?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the MAC & Bronchiectasis Support Group.

I too live in Maine, between Ellsworth and Bar Harbor.
There is no pulmonologist clinic within 3 hours of me.
I returned to Seacoastonline NH where we retired from to get established with a pulmonologist.
We winter in west Phoenix and I was misdiagnosed with COPD/emphysema.
A friend of mine in Denver suggested NJH which I had never heard of.
I went for a week in February . I am so glad that I did. I was blown over with the info, care, professionalism that I received there! I return in October for a 2day follow up. Every test gets immediate results. I would have taken the better part of a year having all the tests and results if I had tried anywhere but a designated BE/ MAC , NTM facility.
If they are designated in this way I can only assume you will be in good hands.
This forum has been a great inspiration o me each morning as I am doing my AC.
Good luck

@mame I go to UMASS Worcester. I don’t know if that’s closer than Mass General for you. I see Dr. Gallant as my pulmonologist, Dr. Sood as my surgeon, and Dr Wessolossky in infectious disease. I can’t say enough good things about that team of doctors. Dr. Gallant is great for a person with bronchiectasis. Good luck wherever you land. ( irene5)

I have tried 2 pulmonologists in the area and been misdiagnosed by one and told I could only have a bronchoscopy to test for sputum. So I do not have one yet in Az. When in Maine I go 4 hours south to NH. It is sad that we depend on specialist for care and find out how little they actually know.

I live in Bridgton, Maine, near the N. Conway, New Hampshire. I to the Chest Medicine Clinic in South Portland. I see Dr. David Cohen. He has helped me a lot, and referred me to the correct doctor for further testing. I see Dr. James McQuire at Allergy and Asthma Associates. Dr. McQuire tested me for immune deficiency, found out I had Common Variable Immune Deficiency-I am being treated for that, and have not been sick since I started immune therapy through infusions. The two doctors have been great.

Thank you. Worcester is farther than Boston but I have not heard anyone comment about mass General in Boston yet. I was diagnosed with MAC 6 years ago and pulmonologist suggested not treating, wait & see. Did very well for several years and then I’ve had about 7 various antibiotics in the last year for colds culminating in pneumonia in April. I had a broncoscopy post pneumonia in June and MAC results still not back. Almost 8 weeks! I see my pulmonologist on Wednesday, wondering what he will say. I just found this group this week and am learning SO much!!!
Thanks for replying and I wish you well on your recovery.

Yes, you will find a wealth of information to be gleaned from this group. And undoubtedly you will “connect” with members who will become fast friends. I was cured of MAC at UMASS and am forever grateful for the kind, caring, professionals there. It is a teaching hospital so everyone is on his/her game! Best of luck, irene5
