Severe Tortuous & Redundant Colon
I had a colonoscopy for symptoms of unexpected weight loss, severe pain, bloating, early satiety and chronic vomiting with bowel movements. I have had these symptoms for years (15), but they have increased in frequency and severity. The doctor discovered severe tortuosity and redundant colon. He said he had to get help in moving the scope through manually the very tight turns and twists. My question is: What medications have proven successful to management? Best diet? Doctor said it was so bad that surgery may be the best course of action, but they try and avoid that for obvious reasons. Anyone have a success story?

Thank you. It is comforting to know that I am not alone in my suffering.
Hmmm. I have a difficult gut and eat a lot of vegetable soups and hot cereals. I like lots of liquids (hot drinks, water), as I think they help move things through my extra long colon. Dense foods in smaller amounts or none, as they constipate. And a host of other limitations food-wise must be followed too as I ruined a "born with" sensitive gut with junk food for too many years due to youth and ignorance.
I have basically the same issue—a colon that is twice as long as it should be and it’s severely twisted. I alternate between constipation and diarrhea. My GI doctor has not been able to guide me as to whether or not I should be eating low or high fiber food, which makes my condition even more stressful. Any relevant comments would be appreciated. I’m trying to avoid a Colectomy.
Thank you.
I was told to go to a colorectal dr. , mostly cancer patients go to this type of dr.but I was told that they specialize in just the intestines.
Don't know if this is true or not cuz I have not checked it out yet.
Are they different from GI doctors?
Apparently they are different. I was told by a doctor that the GI treats the entire GI TRACT, from esophagus to anus.
Where as the colorectal drs specifically treat the small and large intestines. The larger portion of their patients have intestinal/colon cancer. I have not followed up on it, for myself yet.
I am so sorry. I know this conundrum well. I think I have tried everything. High fiber creates a very very painful and uncomfortable build up of gas as the twists and turns essentially stop all motility at that point and nothing gets through until days later it finally "unkinks" and I have a two-three day purge of diarrhea and vomiting. Then it starts all over again. Miralax does the same thing for me. I hope you find relief.
Does stress, even every day stress, matter at all? I am wondering why your gut "unkinks." I know with whatever is going on with my gut, I can feel kinked up and gassy and then I do a relaxing imagery routine and I can "feel" my gut unwinding.
I don't know. I do have a lot of stress in my life on a day to day basis. Maybe I can try that. Thank you.
mrd, when you have the time and energy would you please clarify the following from your post:
1. What is SOB
2.your hiatal hernia, is pushing on your lungs. What does it feel like? What imaging showed the hernia pressing on your lungs?
3. Too difficult procedure: what procedure? What procedure and if you ignored the dr. , would you have this procedure? Second surgeon, what was your first surgery ?
4. How did your pulmonologist save your life?
5. Where are the ulcers? What do they feel like? Should they be removed?
6. Years of constipation...what caused this? Is it ok now?
7. How was your GI bleed caused and diagnosed? How can it be ignored?
I have many of the same issues: iron deficiency anemia and must use infusions, due to celiac disease severe damage in small intestines so malabsorption will be a problem forever, 17 years of CIC💩‼️, all GI treatments useless. I use miralax at high doses for many years (okay w/GI), to keep 💩 quite un-thick, thin mush to diarrhea. I know I asked a ton of questions.... I am getting nowhere. 17+ years of fighting, I have literally almost zero energy to keep up fighting. Thanx ShelleyW
