Does anyone have experience with Mirtazapine?

Posted by faithshouse @faithshouse, Jun 20, 2019

My husband has trouble staying asleep, and falling back to sleep when he awakens during the night. It concerns him, but we wouldn't say that he is depressed. He had heard about Mirtazapine for sleeping. His doctor prescribed 15 mg. Has anyone had side effects, or depression while taking Mirapine? Is it more for depression, than for sleeping? Thanks for your feedback.

I have taken it for years for sleep and occasionally add a small amount of melatonin with it for restless leg syndrome. The doc told me the smaller the dose the more side effects and the higher the dose the less side effects but I stay at 15mg. Everything has side effects, ugh

Hi, just started taking this med for sleep. 15mg as well. And my doctor told me the same thing about the dosing. Now, I have only taken twice, I am trying to get more natural sleep, but being an insomniac since I was in my teens(don't tell anyone, but I am 59 yrs old) I struggle. Anyway, you experience restless leg? How long after you started taking it did your restless leg start ? I don't want that problem too. Thanks

I take 7.5 mg a night after struggling with other meds and CBT. Has worked wonders for me

I just started taking this drug for depression. It’s working amazingly well for it just after a few days noticing a significant difference in my depression. My appetite has increased because I don’t want to gain wait. The only side affects for me is not sleeping well and sudden onset on leg pain on my right side?
I’m hopeful after my brain gets used to this that these symptoms with disappear? Anyone else?

I took it for about 4 months when I tapered off Klonopin and was having terrible insomnia. I tired it at 15mg, then 7.5mg and it did absolutely nothing for my sleep, so I stopped. I now take Lunesta and it works well for sleep. I did not have any side effects from it.

I took it to try and help w/ Depression and many GI issues.
Was on 5-6 months . First 7.5 mg , which helped some , then upped me to 15 mg but did better in lower dose . She eventually wanted me on 30 but I stayed on 15 a month and dropped to 7.5 mg and then went off it .
I didn’t take for sleep 💤 at all .
I have Ambien for that . Took in am .
I’m not on any antidepressants now and just take .50 mg Klonopin 1-2 x a day for anxiety. That does make me a bit sleepy though and I have chronic fatigue as it is . I have 7 diagnosed chronic digestive disorders that no Dr can help me w/ in 11 years.
Tried it all , even Mayo Clinic testing .
Good luck , I hear Lunesta is good sleep med too .

I have been on mirtazapine 7.5 for about a year and a half. Finally weaned off Ativan which was no longer helping me sleep plus I wanted off of this benzo. I have been sleeping well ever since. Am groggy when I wake up, but it’s worth it!! All my doctors (pcp, sleep med, oncologist) are comfortable with my being on mirtazapine long term, unlike lunesta and Ativan.
You can also get a genetic study to help determine which drugs work best. Best wishes to you!!

Where do you go for a "genetic study?"
Your family doctor?

I see a sleep therapist who’s a nurse practitioner. She ordered it for me. It’s actually testing for antidepressants, anxiety.

I’ve been tapering off of mirtazipine for a year. It did it’s job but I gained 20 lbs. not good. Also made me very dizzy. At a very low dose it could be tolerable. I would get the Genesight testing before taking it. Not sure I’d take it again. Many side effects for me.
Good luck.

Agree that getting the genetic testing is invaluable.
I was fortunate that I haven't gained any weight; the only side effect is that it makes me groggy in the morning.
I’m just so happy that it’s working for me.
