Double Vision and the Brain
I have had double vision for at least a year. Apparently it is caused by my brain, not letting my right eye work correctly. So my Nuro optometrist has given me a prescription for glasses with prisms. I should have them in about 4 weeks.
I have Ataxia because I have damage to my cerebellum .
Does anyone else have this?

I don’t have that but I can really empathize with you and I hope your prism glasses are helpful.
Back in 1989, I got double vision when I was pregnant with my son. One evening I felt what I can only describe as a “sprong” in my right eye. Gradually, over the next few days, that eye started looking off center until it was very noticeably looking in a different direction. I couldn’t read, watch TV, or drive. I don’t even know how you can write your post or read this one. I found that the only thing that helped me was to put a patch over my right eye so that only my left eye could see. That way, nothing was doubled.
It only lasted about a month, thank goodness, but it was awful and scary since my doctors didn’t know why it was happening. I can’t imagine living with it for a year, as you have done.
Years after my son was born, I had to see a retina specialist to treat my acute angle glaucoma. I told him what had happened with the double vision while I was pregnant and asked if he knew what it could be. He told me, oh, yes, sometimes pregnancy can cause pressure on a certain nerve which causes double vision. And he had seen it before. What a relief it was to FINALLY have an answer.
have had double vision four years now, ware glasses with prism lenses, would not be able to drive because images go side by side, had a brain MRI and a dark spot was seen on the scan and was told was possible mini stroke. Also have cataracts. I am nearsighted, distance vision is fuzzy again so need to update prescription, cost of prisms not covered by vision insurance and am on medicare
The prism glasses should help you.
Nov 11 2021 fx my hip and while I was in hospital got Covid with pneumonia and being on steroids developed double vision in rt eye. In January an episode lasted 6 hours while watching Tv off and on along with white lava 3bubble like floats periphery vision lasting seconds rt eye . I saw Dr and after ex and Tests she said it is due to muscle supporting the eye anis having spec prescription lens made and am waiting for their arrival and see her after 4 weeks of wearing them awake hrs. Now in Oct 20 15 Ihad cataracts removed bilateral 2wks apart and have Toric lens impacted in this eye and have not worn glasses since except cheaters after having Covid for paper work reading and justifying. Hi, "SusanEllen66 @SusanEllen66". I too, have double vision. I have many eye conditions, but the double vision bothers me the most. I joked to a friend that I was going to go watch some tv, but I always have such a hard time deciding which screen to watch, even though I am only looking at one tv! LOL! There are specialists who deal with double vision. I went to one, but he said I have so many eye issues that there is nothing they can do for me. My optometrist does add the prisms into my lenses and how much it helps, depends on the day or time. I hope you have better success! I never had double vision before I was diagnosed with a carotid ohpthalmic aneurysm. Have you had an MRI or MRA of your brain? I have seen some articles lately on aneurysms, so I have been doing some reading on mine. I also have a neurological body sway (involuntary), which makes me feel like I am standing in a rocking boat, and I read that this aneurysm can cause balance and walking issues, so I may check into that with my neurologist. I have the ataxia, too, so that certainly doesn't help the balance issue! Well, good luck with your problems and hope you get an excellent resolve!

My husband, age 82, has had double vision all his life. He does not have prisms in his lenses and has managed extremely well to know which is the correct image to respond to. He never complains and has no worse issue than me and I do not have double vision.
how did he manage to identify the correct image and drive. for me it was scary and I was afraid of getting into an accident, the prism lenses help and now able to drive with confidence except it has been four years now and distance vision becoming fuzzy again so need to update lenses. I am 71, have cataracts and floaters, optometrist says not bad enough for surgery. Older brother, 81, just had the surgery and says no need to wait.
I dont know how he knows, he just does. Has had double vision since a child due to eye turn. Exercises corrected eye turn but not brain. 4 years between lens adjustments seems long and I agree with your brother, the time for surgery is when you are bothered enough. Go to an opthalmologist for best eye treaatment.
Hi @pkh3381, it's great that you can offset the struggle with humor. I try to do that too. Will say "Oh look at the moons tonight, they're so beautiful." or "That's a funny sign, both of them". I've had double vision for about 4 or 5 years, didn't realize I had it for a while, just thought it was a bad pair of glasses causing it (because I'm not the brightest apparently). Curious how you were diagnosed with the aneurysm? I have had multiple brain MRIs and a CT scan with nothing conclusive. I did have 3 lesions on my brain, but they're in an area that the surgeon assures me I probably had since I was a teenager and just didn't know it, that it's unrelated. I failed a balance test at my neuro eye doctor, but he couldn't say why. I also get dizzy a lot, but that really started after I got covid a few years ago. I also briefly feel like I'm still moving when I stop my car at a red light. This stuff is no fun.
Hi; my name is Gail, read your reply to Susan, my brain MRI showed dark spot which might also be an aneurysm told possible mini stroke. I too have balance issues but not tested for and sometimes experience the movement feeling, get dizzy and lightheaded but have had low blood pressure all my life. My double vision seems to affect both eyes, can alternate covering each eye with same result. Prism for right eye thicker than left.
