Lyme Disease and PMR

Posted by girastancil @girastancil, Aug 23, 2022

Does anyone know (or know of research) connecting PMR and Lyme disease. I have all the PMR characteristics but no indicators in my blood work. I had lyme disease 4 years ago but it was recognized early and treated with antibiotics. thank you

Thank you John for your comments. Putting this together piece by piece until my appointment with the rheumatologist which is 4 months away!

I was treated for Lyme a month ago and then treated for PMR. The prednisone had an immediate beneficial effect. I am about seven weeks into the prednisone and successfully on my first taper 12.5. A recent visit to an orthopedic surgeon resulted in a discovery after testing fluid from the knee that I have Lyme in my knee. I am starting on four more weeks of doxycycline. I suspect that the Lyme triggered the PMR, unbearable pain both sides in groin biceps and neck . The pain went away with the prednisone after several weeks with an immediate significant decrease.

Also possible I never had PMR but the prednisone did get rid of the pain.

That is my story.

I have had Lyme and Babesiosis, now PMR. The tests for both Lyme and PMR are not definitive. Good luck navigating through these. I think all the doctors can do is throw medication at them and hope for the best, lol.

I w as diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2019 was treated and within a year was diagnosed with pmr. I am still struggling with pmr, mostly fatigue at this point. I am on Cymbalta 90 mg and am now down to 2mg prednisone.
Not much pain but great fatigue. I do think the Lyme triggered some process that led to the pmr although my doctor thinks they are very separate diseases.

I have been diagnosed with Lyme Disease 4 times over the past few years and feel that this had weakened my immune system to now have PMR for over 6 years. A lot of symptoms are similar, too, especially the extreme fatigue and pain. It's only a guess but one of those "gut" feelings.

Lucky me, I had cdc verified Lyme disease and PMR and Fibromyalgia. I remember the infected tick bite that took 5 months to clear up in 2004, but didn’t think much about it as I grew up in TN with ticks being normal if you do much outside. I wasn’t diagnosed with Lyme until 2019! My pain started in 2011. Diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but no treatments worked because in 2019 I finally got diagnosed with PMR with fibromyalgia. It’s been a 20 year ride from hades! So yea, I personally believe Lyme can screw up our immune systems which can lead to fibro and/or PMR. A LOT of these patients test positive for Lyme. Wonder how many don’t realize this is a possibility and never get tested as those little buggers tear down their body.

I was tested and treated for Lyme 3 months ago and when the doxycycline had little effect I was diagnosed with PMR and the Prednisone had an immediate effect. Last week fluid in my knee was tested positive for Lyme so I am back on doxycycline for four weeks in addition to my Prednisone. I seem to have both.
