My Experience on Evenity for Treating Osteoporosis
Thought I would share for those considering or on Evenity for osteoporosis:
Afer much research and discussions with my GP and Cardiologist, I have decided to start my treatment with Evenity injections. As with all drugs, there are many side effects. My biggest concerns were stroke and heart attack. However, considering that I do no have any history for either, for me personally, the benefits outweigh the risks. As my GP said to me, "if everyone only thought about the side effects of the drugs, no one would be taking them".
I had my first injections (subcutaneously in the back of each arm) on June 30th. The nurse that administered the injections discussed the drug in depth, along with all the possibilities that may occur. She also mentioned that for all the patients that she has seen, none has had any side effects.
The injections are once a month for only one year, so I'm hoping that this works well for me and I can improve my bone density, especially in my spine, where I need it the most.
My endocronologist has also prescribed Hydrochlorthiazide for my idiopathic hypocalcemia. I have an appointment with an allergist this month to confirm whether I still have an allergy to sulfa drugs, since this drug contains sulfa. Apart from this I take D3 orally and try to obtain additional calcium through foods not supplements. Trying to walk 3-4 times a week and will begin with a few weight bearing exercises.
My journey began September, 2019 when I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. After waiting to see three doctors, receiving three denials from insurance company for Evenity, which took several months, I am hopefully on my way for a favorful outcome.

@19debbie53 I had less of a reaction to Evenity shots when I switched to my thighs. I am PM'ing you.
Don't apologize. Trust yourself and your process.
I have just completed my 3rd mth of Evenity injections. I have my injections administered in the stomach and I have no pain or soreness or afterwards. I was told by the nurse that most people that she injects prefer them in the stomach.
I had my Evenity injections in the thigh and had less of a reaction.
Had my first shot on Friday (2days ago) and I'm not having any issues so far. My hope is that when I see my oncologist in October, my CLL test results are what's normal for me. I was able to plead with my rheumatologist to order bone markers as a baseline but she refused to order at 4 months in. Her reasoning is either you commit to 12 months or not. So I'll see if I can order thru quest somehow. I do think I'll try no matter the bone markers to complete the 12 unless something else comes up.
Thanks always for such a special group of people who've been so helpful and encouraging. I would have been lost not having this forum.🩷
I have had 6 months of injevtions in alternating arms and no real issues. I take an antihistamine and Tylenol beforehand, and no redness or skin reaction. But it probably differs for everyone. I will say that how slowly and well placed the injections are done makes a difference.
I had soreness and redness and then got injections by another nurse. The replacement nurse injected more slowly, and I didn't have the same reaction. I told the regular nurse (trying not to offend her), and when she injected more slowly, I did not have the reaction. I use my left arm and right side of my stomach.
My injections are in the thigh and I have not had a reaction to them. I have been on the Evenity for three months. I have had a lot of other side effects which I will post about once I have finished reading all of these posts.
Hi @windyshores. I know this is a super old post but I know you have suffered multiple spine fractures. I fractured my L3 in January. My spine doc treated it conservatively - no back brace and believe it or not, he gave me no limitations. I chose not to bend or lift anything for 3 months based on the advice of a radiologist friend and as well as my pain MD.
May I ask you what you can or cannot do? Do you bend forward at all? My PT therapist taught me to bend my knees (they're not great either) instead of my back. Curious how you go about day-to-day activities. Is there anything you don't or won't do anymore because of your fractures? Do you lift anything at all? How about exercise? What do you do for exercise?
Many thanks for your help! Only someone who has gone through the same thing (albeit you had many more fractures than me) knows what it like to live with a healed fracture(s). Doctors and PT therapists don't help at all as far as figuring out the day-to-day stuff.
I am 74 years old and have been on Evenity for 5 months with 7 months to go. My main goal is to strenthen my Bones and Increase my Bone Density so i can have a Spinal Fusion done on my back. Im also dealing with Scoliosos!
I would like to know from the Group on this site, the Positives and Negatives of a Spinal Fusion.
The spinal fusion cant happen if my Bone Density doesnt improve.
Thanks for any input,
Joe
