Vitamin D side effects?

Posted by tylerk @tylerk, Dec 28, 2021

For about the past year, I’ve been taking a vitamin D supplement, mostly as a precautionary measure for covid. About 2 and a half weeks after I got the second vaccine, I started having eye flashes (ocular migraines) and a light headed and spacey feeling. The spacey/foggy feeling was constant, and eye flashes about once a week on average.

I decided to stop taking supplements, for approximately 6 weeks. The symptoms didn’t seem to be effected much. There were several people that had colds I was around for Christmas (not covid), so I took about 7,000iu’s total daily of vitamin D for about 6 days. I never got sick, but the lightheadedness seems to have ramped up slightly, and have had eye flashes every couple days.

Has anyone else experienced these symptoms as a result of taking vitamin D. As a side note, I’m doctor had me get a brain mri to be sure nothing is going on (still waiting on results)

I am taking short term of vitamin D3 on advice of Hematologist. Trying to see if even a month of that plus an Rx of Folee (?) don’t have my bottle handy to put exact RX down will change the numbers of my blood counts. If it makes no difference, and he really does not not expect to see any but has to try due to insurance Regulations, then I will have to have a bone marrow biopsy. It is already scheduled so it can be done in a timely manner. My question is, I’m taking 2000 iu a week, I wear dentures ((I’m 81) and my gums are getting sore underneath my plates. Any suggestions. I definitely will contact my Dr on Mon he is awesome and I trust him, just wondered if anyone else had a reaction similar cjhover6342 Thanks

@cjhover6342, what did you learn from your doctor? How are you doing?

I'm on vitamin D because my serum levels go down if I don't take it. I did supplement it at a higher level recently (an extra 10k IU a week). But it's back solidly in normal range at 40 .

My multi has the standard 2000 IU, but that doesn't always help enough. May be my kidneys or the hyperparathyroidism. My eGFR has plummeted 30 units this year (still normal, though), so I'm guessing kidneys. 🫤

But if you're having migraines and you got the COVID vaxx and boosters, I'd ask for cardiac eval.

I had a nuclear stress test in February 2021, as I was having intermittent HBP. I was also 51, so my insurance paid for it as part of standard "old people" screening. They also suggest colonoscopy at that point.

If you're over 50 and haven't checked your heart, it's not a bad idea. You could be having intermittent blood pressure issues that aren't a problem at the doc's office. Esp. if you don't see docs often.

My screening caught my 5.1 cm ascending aortic aneurysm.

I was taking Vitamin D3 because I have bone loss and will not take drugs. In a recent appointment with a nutritionist he told me I was taking too much Vitamin D3. My max should be 5000.

The recommended daily allowance for vitamin D is 4000 IU per day. I take two seizure medications both of which cause vitamin B and D to metabolize at a faster rate thereby lowering my levels. Initially I took 6000 IU per day until my levels where were the doctor wanted them to be?. Then lowered them to 2000 IU but my level continued to drop so she currently has me on 3000 IU per day. Admittedly people have different needs but you should ask your doctor to check your level. Although most need to supplement there's no since in taking more than your body needs.
Are you taking any medication that interferes with vitamin D?
Also you should take vitamin K with vitamin D.
Take care,
Jake

The amount of D3 I take was recommended by my doctor as I refuse to take the medication they want me to take for osteoporosis. Additionally I do take K-D. The only other medications I take are amlodipine and Losartan for high blood pressure. They first started me on losinapril but I had an anaphalactic shock to that one but luckily they got me into ICU and so I didn't die. I do not do well with drugs. Perhaps the reason I have lived so long is because I refuse to take most drugs . I will be 90 next month and that kind of scares me because the end is near. But I do not have anything major wrong with me. As you can see I do not have dementia. I live alone with the help of a housekeeper every 3 weeks and a gardener once a month. I can still drive and do, even on I-10. I just stay on the right and factor in the time that I might get behind a slow moving truck. My husband died three years ago and I miss him dreadfully. We were married for 59 years and together for 62. So life does not have a lot of meaning for me now. I have lived a long time and hopefully when the end comes it will be peaceful.
