Inflammation and bloating

Posted by elenacostarica @elenacostarica, Jan 17, 2023

Hello, im 40 and learning to improve my life after being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism a s Hashimoto’s, and one thing that is being super uncomfortable is bloating for no reason. Early morning, middle of the day, anytime… my lower stomach just gets huge and hurts, then the next day its “normal”. Since I was young I got bloated for no reason too.
Any tips or ideas? My intestines seem to have a mind of its own 🙁

I do have an esophagus problem where the opening of the esophagus at the stomach does not work properly and causes problems, but I don't remember the name of or much about it. Another case where a Dx is thrown out there, but no resolve or treatment, or even the problem itself, is ever really discussed. I seem to run into this all the time. But, my mind is not good today because I am not feeling well, so it could be a "me" problem! LOL! I will look into it.

Oh yes, I understand the stomach bloating! I am overweight due to lack of exercise because of a neurological condition causing severe problems with walking/balance/falling, and sometimes I feel like my stomach is going to "fall off" and I reach down & hold it for relief. I know, it sounds crazy, so I normally don't even say it to anyone!😉

@pkh3381 You say that you have a neurological condition that causes severe problems with walking and balance. Do you ever have physical therapy to help with these problems? Physical therapy can also help with seated exercises and help to prevent bloating.
Can you call your doctor tomorrow and ask for a PT referral?

Thank you, yes, PT was ordered for me, but then I have had so many health problems, one of the biggest deterrents, at the time to the PT, being a chronic diarrhea & bowel incontinence problem, and then I got three very long episodes of Covid since the end of Jan. It has just been one thing after the other. But, last week I sent a message thru the portal to my neurologist to confirm the contact info for the Pt and I haven't heard back yet. The Covid has really done a number on my balance and walking, so I am very leery of the Pt at this time, but I will give it a try. I have so many leftovers from Covid, but I am trying to go on with life in spite of them, so again, I have intentions of trying it. Thanks again for asking.

I have had Celiac Disease my whole life. Bloating is just normal for me and I follow a very strict diet-no cheating ever. I have had very thorough allergy tests for years. I’m allergic to at least twenty foods other than being intolerant of gluten. Find a dr who will spend a lot of time with you and listen! Good luck.

@pkh3381 When the doctor returns your phone call, ask if it would be possible to have in-home PT. Also, do you need to ask the neurologist, or can you call your primary care doctor? Maybe, if you need to you can call your insurance company and ask about in-home PT. Tell them you are home-bound (and why) and ask for an ok to get in-home PT.
Will you make some calls tomorrow and then let me know?

You know the way it goes. My neurologist is the one who referred me for PT, who treats me for my neurological body sway, so if I ask my PCP, I KNOW he would tell me to contact the neurologist! LOL!! I will ask my neurologist about the in-home PT, but he didn't mention it before, and he knows my condition, and all the problems I have had, causing delays in getting the PT. It is a specialized PT and there is only one qualified PT Specialist near me [about 15 miles], and she is very busy, so it would not surprise me if this must be done at the facility, but it never hurts to ask, does it? To be truthful, I am okay with some delay because I am such a mess after my Covid bouts. I know the Neuro will message me back thru the portal. For all I know, he may be on vacation, because he is usually very prompt. But, thank you so much for your helpfulness and your concern. I appreciate that.

Avocados, bell peppers, tomatoes, white potatoes, onions and garlic, pineapple, honey, green tea, ginger, to name a few. Each individual is different. What I’m sensitive to may be okay for you.

Dear friend, my throat itches when I eat the foods you mentioned, plus so many more. My root problem is cross reactivity between my pollen allergies and foods with the same proteins. This is called Oral Food Syndrome. Just wanted to make sure you are aware of this in case you also have pollen allergies. If so, you look up food cross reactions with birch trees, ragweed, etc. It's good to have the full list to avoid reacting to additional foods and spices. These food allergies are the worst! Best of luck to you! Julie

@elenecostrica,
Have you been tested for Celiac disease.
I have Celiac, follow a strict diet and still have bloating, but much less severe. I see another Celiac has also written about this.
Bloating is just one of the bothersome symptoms. It is an easy blood test to rule out this possibility.
Celiac and Thyroid issues are all part of Autoimmune diseases.
I hope you find some answers.
