Could your PMR have been a result of the Covid mRNA vaccine?
I have taken vaccines my entire life. I believe in their ability to prevent diseases. From childhood vaccines for school, to Tdap with the birth of my grandchildren, to influenza and more, and yes to the Covid vaccines. I believe medical science in my lifetime is nothing short of amazing.
But I have read some science papers recently that are now questioning if some individuals may contract PMR after receiving the new mNRA Covid boosters.
I had never heard of PMR. I contracted it in mid April 2024. My latest Covid booster was in late December 2023, my 4th or 5th, I've lost count. What gives me pause is that within my closest golfing buddies, a relatively small group of 12 or so men, another buddy contracted PMR in February 2024. His last booster was in early November, 2023. That's a very small sample group to have two PMR cases.
Does anyone else have concerns or experiences similar to mine?

If you search the PMR chat room you will find many threads on the topic of vaccinations causing PMR. I got PMR following an adverse reaction to the Shringrix vaccination. I have become convinced that it's not the vaccine type as much as it is your personal immune system. All vaccines energize your immune system and if your system has other challenges you become vulnerable to auto immune problems.
At some point you will realize that the cause is not the focus now, it's learning to live with it. This chat room offers great support, I hope you lean in and learn because everyone's journey is a little different.
This has been discussed a fair bit here. Yes, there are documented cases of vaccines having brought on PMR, including the Covid vaccine. My belief is that it's likely to be the adjuvant in the vaccine, the part of the vaccine which is included to heighten an immune response to make the vaccine more effective, which sets some people's immune systems into overdrive. There are lots of ingredients in vaccines, most of which are not mentioned when we're urged to get them. I'm generally in favour of necessary vaccinations but will not have any while I have PMR and my immune system is already malfunctioning.
I already had PMR for a couple of years before Covid, but I did contract Covid twice and I think the Covid exacerbated the PMR symptoms to this day. I had 1 normal bout with Covid but the 2nd bout almost had me miss my granddaughter's wedding I was so weak.
I came down with PMR symptoms about 10 days after my last Covid vaccine shot. Very difficult to know if they are connected in anyway. A nurse suggested to me they might be connected. PMR is in remission but still tapering off the prednisone.
As I mentioned in a previous thread on this site, yes, I do blame the Pfyzer vaccine for acquiring PMR. It happened within 5 days of my second shot back in March of 2021. My case was hard to diagnose because it was so mild--I only hurt at night when laying in bed. It lasted a about a year and a half and flared up again when I got COVID in Dec. 2022. I tapered off a low dose of prednisone in a few months and have not had a reoccurence since, despite just having COVID again last week. This last bout was extremely mild--I was just tired to begin with and then it acted like a head cold for a few days. This is despite never having another booster since March 2021! I will never have another mRNA vaccination again and I probably won't get the Shingrix vax. I did get the old shingles vax long ago, so hoping it has given me some immunity. Finger crossed.
I checked my husband's medical records and he got both COVID and flu shots in December, 2023, following by a bad stomach flu in February 24. He had symptoms of PMR while recovering from the later. Terrible systemic pain and hardly able to move. Took about 4 months to get to a rheumatologist and get the PMR diagnosis. Maybe the combination of the vaccines and flu triggered it.
The Covid vaccine has always made me poorly for at least a week every time so I will do everything I can to make sure I give my immune system a boost. In the past I have had real flu twice, Pneumonia twice and Pleurisy once. Since having flu jab not even a sniffle every year. I will have the flu jab at the same time as the Covid one. A few spare Pred ready in case I need them. Apart from PMR I am a fit and healthy woman but I know if I don’t have the boosters I could be in trouble
For me, I had a combination of starting a statin and then receiving the Shingrix vaccine in close proximity to the onset of PMR. Like others, I wonder whether the adjuvant in the vaccine triggered the over activation of my immune system. It seems there are multiple pathways for this condition to kick in and then not let go.
I hadn't had so much as a cold in 15 years when I took the second Covid so-called vaccine (although it actually isn't) and woke up very sick the next morning. Eight straight weeks of being sick and going back and back to the doctor, then the pain started in my left shoulder and by the time I diagnosed myself and had the third doctor I saw do blood tests and found my inflammation markers were out the roof...the pain had spread to both shoulders and arms, hips and pelvic girdle. Plus I had the trademark stiffnes and inability to move when I woke up in the morning. I literally couldn't get out of bed for at least 15 minutes. Couldn't raise my arms above my head. Then I finally got in with a rheumie who concurred it was PMR and started me on Prednisone.
Do I think it was the vaccine? YES. The CDC is calling many new cases of PMR "vaccine injuries." Now the taxpayers are funding a huge amount of money to come up with another mRNA "vaccine" for the bird flu. Thanks but no thanks.
I asked my Rheumatologist that very question since I had had a Covid booster, flu shot, and pneumonia shot in the fall (all separately) and contracted PMR in early December.
He said no, but I wonder...
