Hi,

My husband recently had his CBC testing done and found out that his platelet count is 120000. His platelets have been in the range of 130000-120000 since 2022. He doesn't have any other symptoms. He has scheduled an appointment with Hematologist. He also had covid in June 2022. Do you think his platelet count can go up with supplements?

Welcome to Connect, @akshatajoshi15. With ‘normal’ platelet values generally reading between 150,000 and 450,000 platelets per microliter, your husband’s level of 120,000 is a little outside the lower end of that window. There can be a number of causes for low platelets including infections, medications or underlying medical conditions. I know the instinct would be to try and raise that level naturally.

However, he has an appointment with a hematologist, a doctor who specializes in blood conditions. It would be better if there were no changes in your husband’s diet or medications (including supplements) before that appointment so that the doctor can run tests and do a fair assessment without having any new variables tossed in. The hematologist will most likely order specific blood tests in effort to help narrow down the potential cause for your husband’s decrease in platelets.
The doctor will be the best person to go over any potential treatments to help reverse the lower platelet level. Does that make sense?

There’s a great discussion in the forum on how to have a successful appointment with a new specialist that you might find helpful:

Personally, I’ve found out that having a little notepad along (or on your phone) with my questions listed in order helped me keep on track with the conversation I wanted to have with my doctors. My husband was along to take notes as well. Our time with doctors is so limited it helps if we’re prepared going in.

Can you think of any specific questions you’d like to ask his new doctor?
