Scary day

On Saturday I felt good so I did my normal Saturday activities. The next day being Sunday, I set my alarm for 6:30 AM to get up in time for church and went to bed about 12:30am. When getting up Sunday morning, I started feeling symptoms right away. I was dizzy, felt weak, had a pounding heartbeat. I fed my cats, got my coffee and some breakfast. When sitting down, I had no symptoms but as soon as I got up, the symptoms returned. I pushed through it and made it to church where I had increased symptoms. I made it through prayer but stayed sitting. Church started at 9:30am and I couldn't shake the symptoms. Finally, I told my boyfriend to take me to the ER. I had all the hook ups and had two EKG's. Turns out I had gotten dehydrated somehow. I did not feel dehydrated at all but the ER doctor gave me a bag of fluid. I started feeling better so he sent me home. He explained that if one has HOCM, it is very important to stay hydrated as if the L ventrical gets dehydrated, it makes the symptoms worse. It is hard for me to stay hydrated because of my ileostomy. It tends to pull alot of fluid from my body but it made sense about the HOCM. So now, I must be very mindful of my fluids and drink more water.

Hello -
I read your post with interest as I also have an ileostomy as well as HCM. I have had a few cardioversions over the past 15 years to Afib. I had my first couple of incidents before I was diagnosed with HCM. It was the afib occurences that lead to the discovery. I try to be very aware of staying well hydrated but it's difficult to stay on top of it sometimes! I'm interested that you also have both conditions - My HCM is NOT genetic leading me to wonder if there is any corelation between the two. Has anyone every speculated about a bacterial connection to you? Someone wondered about that with me... (NOT a medical person I should add... but it did get me thinking..
Currently I am doing quite well on my 5mg of Camzyos, and I am very grateful! Thanks for you post @freedancer69

Thank you for your post. My cardiologist always tells me I must drink a lot of water every day. He said the heart shrinks if it doesn't get enough water. Your reminder to all of us is very timely.

Drinking enough water can become a habit with preparation. Both my cardiologist and primary care
have ordered me to drink 2 liters/quarts each day. Have a reusable water bottle with you at all times and sip often. Mine is 32 ounces, I fill it twice daily. Going to the rest room every 2-3 hours shows you are paced well. Drink more if you are exerting yourself and ask your cardiologist if you should add electrolytes during those times.

I have AHCM and have been having increased symptoms the past few days. I hadn't thought about the dehydration factor. I tend to be chronically dehydrated, and I thank you for the reminder of how important it is to drink a lot of water every day. I am scheduled for a stress echo next week to look for any obstruction. Do you think being hydrated or not could affect the results of the test?

They should tell you what to do to prepare for the test. During the test they will have you do different things. Just follow thier instructions. I don't think the water will affect the test but just check with them first.

I agree with freedancer. Upping your water intake might have an immediate effect on your dehydration level. Because I had the same problem with dehydration, I bought a 32 oz. water bottle and use it every day. It helps me keep track of how much water I am drinking. If I drink about two of those a day, I’m pretty well on track of how much I should drink. I feel much better when I stay hydrated. It makes a lot of difference. It’s great that you are really looking at everything and asking questions. We just keep trying.
