Surgery with a cold?

Posted by charlotte12 @charlotte12, Apr 10 6:26pm

I will have a lengthy 2-3, or 3-4 hours abdominal surgery, mass removal, hysterectomy and more. I developed a cough 2 days ago, started
with a sore throat. No covid. No fever. I understand the anesthesiologist will make a
recommendation. Should I follow his advice if he says it's ok to have the surgery, even
with me coughing every 15 minutes.

I have a chronic cough and I'm having a hysterectomy on Aug 8th.
I'm worried about how to control the cough during recovery, I know it's going to be painful!
I take Tessalon pearls, which help with the cough. You could ask your Dr to prescribe some for you.

I still had some coughing going into surgery, but I was assured they could control it during anesthesia, after surgery I was given tylenol, ibuprofen and oxycodone for pain, in rotation, it controlled the pain from
surgery quite well, to support pressure when coughing, I was given a small foam pillow to hold against my belly,
ask for pillow wedges if you need support for you tailbone, which caused me quite some discomfort/pain from
having being on my back for several weeks-

I definitely will be asking for the pillow. Glad your surgery went well.

Seeing it is a chronic cough, it does make sense to reach out to your care team about a cough suppression or using Tessalon pearls prior or after surgery? I would not take anything prior to surgery without surgeon permission.

@lenchiksf and @equanimous , do you have any advice about Tessalon pearl's .

Have you discussed with your surgeon yet?

clearly your RN, surgeon should have recorded what meds you are taking and adviced you
about pre-op protocol-make sure they know all including if you have allergic reactions

I have discussed this with my surgeon and my primary care Dr. I just had a lung CT and it was clear.
